Upgrading from Yosemite to El Capitan

What is the easiest patch to go from Yosemite to El Capitan, then probably to Sierra? The first part is the most important to me now. Thank you for your help!

Get another SSD, download Sierra (El Capitan is no longer available unless you downloaded it before), create USB installer, install Sierra on new SSD. Use Migration Assistant to move files from El Cap to Sierra.
This leaves the El Cap drive intact in case you want to revert to Yosemite.
It also gives you a working PC if you have troubles installing Sierra.
