Found a free tool for testing network LAN speed. You can use this to test read/write between your Ethernet and WIFI card if you have one.

It's free.

Thanks for posting- I'd never heard of this benchmark- here is the result from my wifi connection (laptop) reading/writing to the ethernet connection (desktop):

This is my result with the same scenario, however my WIFI card is the CM943225 HMB/AzureWave AW-NB290H, 2.4 GHz, bgn, 2 stream, 108 Mbs + BT (3.0).

This is my mid-2012, MacBook Pro which definitely has a better rated WIFI option as:
The BCM4331 single-chip 802.11n dual-band 3x3 wireless solution enables Wi-Fi products to support 450 Mbps data rates and achieves over 600Mbps (TCP/IP) throughput in simultaneous AP/router configurations."

Odd... I was just searching for something like this, Thanks!

So I have a freenass setup on my local network. Everything his hardwired. Here are test with NFS and SMB/CIFS.

Best Score for SMB 500MB
Writing: 110.41
Reading: 4.87

NFS Share of 500MB
Write: 10.69
Read 4.48

I'm stumped on why SMB is so slow to write. I don't know if it's Mavericks or if it's my FreenNAS box, but damn that's a major mofo difference.

This is an 27" iMac.

I think it's both - SMB implementation on Mavericks and on FreeNAS...neither are native to SMB (only Windows is).

I have Open Media Vault (OMV) running on HP MicroServer. It's great Server and OMV is very easy to manage.

I setup an AFP, NFS & SMB share on one of the drives to the same folder.

My results for 500MB file are as follows:

AFP:

NFS:
87745-lan-speed-nfs.png

SMB:

What's interesting is that NFS is faster than AFP on the Mac.
That could be due a poor implementation of the AFP (Netatalk) server on the OMV.

Good find by the OP - Thx.
