Seeing as how the MacPro3,1 definition is used, I'm assuming that it would make upgrading to Sierra more difficult. How much more complexity would be involved in using an iMac definition instead? Thanks.

Over at MacRumors, two members have mentioned built in support for ASM1242 and VL805 USB controllers. This may bode well for USB 3.1 support. I believe Asus uses an ASMedia controller for USB 3.1.

Thanks, I'll check it out. My Gene uses a ASMedia USB 3.1 controller (user manual didn't say the chipset model).

UPDATE: Read the MacRumors link. Looks like Sierra will bring us more compatibility. However, I'm not going to be able to test until after the July 4th holiday.
