When I tried from system prefs on computer A it was not getting the installation app. Is something messed up?

the installer from the app store is stuck at 395 KB and has been for a few minutes. The pie graphic showing download progress is filling out just not increasing the file size.

see the pie has filled out a to over a quarter but the file is 395KB

Ok so you are not using mojave and thats why you wont be able to download the update from sys preferences...
can you go to the launchpad and see how much its downloaded?
applications folder may show wrong size

omg you nailed it! yea launchpad says 3.09GB. Thanks, when this is done I'll use the file to make an installer USB with clover. How do I know which clover build to use?

Clover builds are posted in a way that looks foreign to me. The latest is not posted at the end, the builds seem to be in another order and I am not sure which one to use.
