I know the installer is supposed to appear in /Applications but I have executed that command and the "installer" is downloading as we speak. I put "installer" in quotes because after I ran the command from the question, the output was "Downloading and installing (null) installer
Installing: 31.0%

so firstly does it matter that the command output was the above and secondly where is the installer? I want to make an installation USB but I cannot do that if I have no installer.

You should download the installer from the App Store or in the software updates tabs from system preferences..

Which command are you talking about? Because if you download from system preferences it downloads normally...

I think you would be fine if you use system preferences to download catalina as it shows full 8 gb download

When I tried from system prefs on computer A it was not getting the installation app. Is something messed up?
