Radeon RX 4XX/5XX standalone system, AMDRadeonX4250.kext (GVA support H264) does not support HEVC HW

I use attached dummy kext for Mojave 18C31g, place it into Clover/kexts/other.

For High Sierra 10.13.4 up, change key IOGVACodec to IOGVACodex from dummy kext info.plist, increase system stability/compatibility but Airplay will not work.

Is the same HEVC.10.14.1.kext????

What version of Metal is being shown in Graphics section under System Information for you guys?

On mine, it shows:

Code:
Metal: Supported, feature set macOS GPUFamily2 v1

I have noticed that when I enable the onboard graphics, it changes to v3 (or maybe v4). Is the version dependent on what video card you have?

metal
v4 means Mojave
v3 means High Sierra
v2 means Sierra
v1 means Yosemite

I'm running Mojave. Why is it using the wrong version?
for GPUFamily1, GPU Family2 have another feature set, Family2 do not have v2, v3, v4

macOS GPU family 1
iMac Pro models
iMac models from 2012 or later
MacBook models from 2015 or later
MacBook Pro models from 2012 or later
MacBook Air models from 2012 or later
Mac mini models from 2012 or later
Mac Pro models from late 2013

macOS GPU family 2
Mac models from 2015 or later
MacBook Pro models from 2016 or later
MacBook models from 2016 or later
iMac Pro models from 2017 or later

Going by the charts my system should fall under macOS GPU family 1 since I'm using iMac14,2 (Late 2013).

setting of the SMBIOS do not affect the macOS detection of graphics card
HD4600 is HD4600, RX580 is RX580 no matter what SMBIOS do you set.

Bad stuff
  • After rebooting FCPX, cannot export as h.265 (with a red exclamation mark icon over the HEVC option)
  • GPU was not fully utilized, CPU spun very fast when exporting as HEVC

ioreg file seems to be OK, will upgrade to 18C38b for HEVC test

If HW HEVC encode work, Device Utilization should like attached pngs at 100%.
