Running a Fusion Drive hack with an 256 GB Intel 600p NVMe SSD and a 3 TB Toshiba DT01ACA300 HDD. Initially was running a Core i7-6700 as iMac17,1 and have since upgraded to Core i7-7700k as iMac18,3.

Worked fine in Sierra with the HackrNVMeFamily configuration. Since rebuilding with HS, the wheels have come off so to speak.

Whenever the hack is idle, it usually panics and reboots to the Clover boot screen. During use, sometimes performance is fine and other times there is so much lag that it appears that the os has hung/froze.

Initially I wondered if it was a problem in Nvidia driver, because of the slowdown symptoms, but now i'm not sure.

Looking in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports, all the Kernel*.panic files always contain the com.apple.iokit.IONVMeFamily kext at the top.

Code:

Looking for some general advice to figure out whether this is a hardware failure or software misconfiguration (or *gasp* a bug in HS ;) )

Here's the latest panic report:

I do find it odd that all the details in the Kernel version section are from the older version of this system, when i was running the Core i7-6700 and using iMac17,1.

I've attached some of the panic reports and the customary EFI & .ioreg files.

I'm thinking of cloning the Fusion drive to a off the shelf USB 3 external to see if that's (part of) the problem, but I need some more ideas in terms of isolating the problem further if it is indeed a hardware problem with the SSD or HDD. The Fusion Drive (concept) has worked well for me (SSD performance for often used files, capacity of HDD for media, but it all appears as one single volume), so i'd like to keep using it if possible.

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated. :)

Your ioreg shows 10.13.4.
Panic shows:
Code:
Mac OS version:
17D47

Which is not 10.13.4. 10.13.4 is 17E199.

So maybe your KP report is just a stale report stuck in NVRAM.

You should be using AptioMemoryFix.efi (assuming it works) instead of OsxAptioFix*.efi+EmuVariableUefi-64.efi. It would enable native NVRAM, instead of depending on RC scripts/EmuVariable.

Yes, I saw that @RehabMan -- and was confused by it. It is a freshly generated panic, I get the "your mac was restarted, do you want to send the error report to apple" dialog every time and the timestamps on the .panic files are always new. (Or does the kernel panic detail get stuck in NVRAM... ? ) Even if the panic is stuck in NVRAM... the hack does reboot to Clover boot screen... I guess the approach is to get NVRAM working the best way possible and then attack the KP?

I did see that newer versions of Clover enabled native NVRAM... but I was not able to configure it correctly to a working state, based on all the different versions of Aptio fix ups that are floating around. I'll give it another go...

Can you confirm:
  1. Remove /EFI/EFI/CLOVER/drivers64UEFI/OsxAptioFix3Drv-64.efi
  2. Remove /EFI/EFI/CLOVER/drivers64UEFI/EmuVarialbeUefi-64.efi
  3. Remove /etc/rc.boot.d
  4. Remove /etc/rc.shutdown.d
  5. Deploy /EFI/EFI/CLOVER/drivers64UEFI/AptioMemoryFix.efi
I guess my only concern is how do I get back to working state, *if* AptioMemoryFix.efi does not work?? (I found that trying to switch ended up with a non-bootable system.)

thanks once again for sharing your expertise. :)

Likely stuck in NVRAM.
Check the uptime... if it is the same, it is likely the same stale KP.

Remove all OsxAptioFix*.efi, remove EmuVariableUefi-64.efi.
You can leave RC scripts installed (they do other things, and NVRAM saving is turned off when EmuVariable is not present).
Add AptioMemoryFix.efi (recent builds of Clover include it as an option... As I write this, my build of Clover has AptioMemoryFix.efi built from latest sources).

I just did fresh High Sierra install and I'm having a similar issue on two different computers when I plug in my new Optane 32GB drive and try to boot. IONVMeFamily kernel panic. When I remove it no issue.

AptioMemoryFix.efi doesn't work on my MSI x99 board, using OsxAptioFix2Drv-free2000.efi and EmuVariableUefi-64.efi. I ended up removing the Optane drive and installing to a SATA SSD.

I also have a Skull Canyon NUC where AptioMemoryFix.efi does work but I'm getting the same IONVMeFamily kernel panic.

Happy to provide additional details but I'm not sure how to get the crash reports.

No "Problem Reporting" files attached.
Read FAQ, "Problem Reporting" again. Carefully. Attach all requested files/output.

Note: OsxAptioFix2Drv-free2000.efi not recommended (not even by the developer that created it).

Unfortunately, the OsxAptioFixDrv and OsxAptioFix2Drv won't boot with my MSI board, seems to be a pattern on the forum. Neither will AptioMemoryFix.efi. However my NUC 6i7KYK (following your guide) does boot with AptioMemoryFix.efi and then I get the same panic. Files attached.

This is the EFI you're using on your NUC6i7KYK?
If so, it is not according to my guide... (which does not use AppleALC.kext)

But... Try different NVMe device.

I got frustrated and ended up changing things... I did start with your list and I was going back to it eventually. I don't have another NVMe device at the moment but I should probably fix that. I saw others had luck with the 900p so I figured the 32GB cut-down version would work.

Is it possible to patch High Sierra to allow support for this NVMe device? I need to decide if I'm returning it or not. Thanks.
