I suggest that you consider restarting, stop at the TonyMac screen and type -v to get into verbose mode, then watch all the kexts load......note which ones take a long time to load and which ones fail, that will be one hint of incompatibilities.
Take a look at Console for hints, though it can be a bit difficult to sort out the relevant information.
You might also check Activity Monitor to check RAM usage and whether a given program might be hogging resources or 'not responding' which will give you the beachball.
