I'm using nvme in 11.6 with clover patch, which would be the steps to upgrade to Sierra?

I find with the final Sierra, you need to remove IONVMeFamily.kext. For installation, you can use KextsToPatch in config.plist to patch native IONVMeFamily.

I see that you put 10_12_0 yesterday
I ran the script to build a HackrNVMeFamily-10_12_0.kext, I placed it in my kexts/Other/ folder, I'm still getting the same exact error screen.

I removed the kext patches from the other IONVMeFamily.kext.

Is there something I'm missing?

Read up on Clover and kext patching via KextsToPatch. Then you might begin to understand what you should be looking for...

After scratting about for info here, I built the kext from your plist! Dumped NVMeGeneric.kext and used the generated HackrNVMeFamily-10_11_6.kext. Works!

Still showed as external so followed the guide here (cheers to [URL='http://www.tonymacx86.com/members/giacomoleopardo.100080/']giacomoleopardo[/URL])
to make a custom SSDT-1.aml for the EFI\EFI\CLOVER\ACPI\patched folder.

Now it shows as an internal NVMe

It works fine but got this when generating the kext:
