Off the Shelf Native Airport - PCI Express Wifi Card!

The card was a breeze to setup, and it's working just fine. However, I did notice in the Network preferences it says that Ethernet is connected, but there is no cable going to the Ethernet port on the motherboard. The Wi-Fi service is connected and "green" in Network preferences too, but if I remove or turn off the Ethernet service, it kills the Wi-Fi connection. Has anyone else seen this on their hack with this card? Thanks for all the useful info, great forum.

Hi,

has anyone tried this one from buyincoins '11N PCI-E Wireless 300M Lan Card with External Antenna'? I orderd one but will not build hackintosh yet for some months. It is cheap 300Mbps card, only $13.6 and free shiping worldwide (but shiping is usualy 2-4 weeks), and that is 3x less then WDN4000. Looks like good deal if you do not need 450Mbps. I think they still have Xmass 10% of coupon valid today and maybe tomorow.

Someone in coment said this one is using Atheros AR928X chip, and that one should be out of box, plug and play Airport.

The chipset mentioned as AR9281. It probably uses a XB91 / HB91 module.
The PCI ID for this device is assumed to be 168c:002a (the default AR9281 ID).

Has there ever been a solution to getting this card to see higher channels than 64 under OSX?

I haven't found a fix yet. Haven't looked very hard though. This is the only problem with this card. The channel frequency range sucks!

If you figure out a solution let us know.

Well I might have found a solution to the crappy 5ghz channel support not going past 64. This card does not have a proper regdomain set for OS X to use or understand, but does work right with windows because the drivers handle the regdomain correctly.

Changing the regdomain, has worked with other Atheros cards under OS X.

Changing the regdomain might be ILLEGAL in your country. THIS MOD/HACK CAN BRICK YOUR T-P LINK WI-FI CARD, ITS NOT MY FAULT YOU DID IT, EVEN THOUGH I SAID IT COULD BRICK YOUR CARD. :banghead: :banghead:

I'm going to use these two tools, to change my regulator domain later tonight. I don't have a guide or anything yet because I haven't done anything as of yet. Will advise my results once complete.

Only thing I can say... You will need Windows 7 or higher to make changes to the AR9380 EEPROM.

If there are any brave souls, out there give it a shot. Stock apple Atheros card regdomain = 0x0

Good Luck,

Mrengles

Does anyone with this card have the WiFi randomly shut off? It will still say I'm connected, but just stop working.

Have you used a Wi-fi analyst tool to check for other wireless networks in your area, that might be causing interference? Sound like you have classic symptoms. 2.4Ghz cordless phone and microwaves also cause issues, and if you live near any Military bases Radar and sonar can really mess with the 5ghz band too.

Good luck,

There's literally hundreds around me - I live in a multi-story apartment building, so it usually picks up 30-40 hotspots.

So is this just a software limitation of the Airport drivers? Because I have a stable connection in Windows 7.

I had the opportunity to test this card- and I can confirm that it works perfectly with no additional monkeying around. AirDrop works. :) Native Airport!

:headbang:

I installed this card in my new build, but nothing shows up in System Preferences > Network (Wi-Fi does not show up on the left side where Ethernet, Firewire, Bluetooth, etc...
Can someone explain what I need to do.
