max is not 4.

RAM does not come in 6GB sticks. If you have 12, you likely have 1 4GB stick and 1 8GB stick.

There may be a maximum RAM spec for OS X, but I'm not sure where it is. I've heard of people installing on 32GB, so I know the max is at least at 32.

Most of my laptops are 8GB (except for the Lenovo which is 4GB). And my desktop is 16GB. The HP Envy I owned/hacked had 12GB.
