Comments

I built this Hackintosh using Unibeast (made installation USB-disk from already purchased OSX Lion on my Mac Mini)

- I changed nothing in my BIOS except IDE -> AHCI

- For installation it booted up off the fly with no flags nescessary.

- The installation itself went on without flaw and was quickly up and running (I installed OSX to my Crucial SSD)

- This is what i selected in Multibeast 4.2.1 :

Windows 7

I'm a gamer, so i thought I'd install Windows 7 alongside OSX, but on a different HDD (the Seagate one)
I did not find any tutorial on this? (please correct me if I'm wrong) - So I went with logics and hoped for the best. This is how it went:

- Shut down the system, connected my Seagate HDD, and booted OSX as usual.

- In Disk Utilities, I partitioned the drive with 2 partitions; 1 - HFS (GUID), 2 - FAT (MBR).

- Shut down, disconnect the Crucial SSD with OSX on it.

- Booted Windows 7 Ultimate x64 original install disc, completed installation and ran Windows Update.

- Shut down, disconnected Seagate HDD, connected Crucial SSD.

- Booted OSX, ran Multibeast 4.2.1 again, reinstalled DSDT.

- Shut down, reconnect Seagate HDD.

After that I again switched it on, and Chimera now boots both OSX Lion and Windows 7.

Additional info

- I use Logic 9 for music production and therefore I have an M-Audio Fast Track USB soundcard attached via USB. This worked without any trouble with the drivers provided from M-Audio's website.

- I did get kernel panic once. I can't remember exactly what it was, but I think it was something with CPU fail and the number "3".. I will update if it comes around again.
- UPDATE - Kernel panic was caused by applehda.kext, so i deleted it. -

- I want to thank tonymacx86 and the tonymacx86.com forums for the help regarding hardware choice, Unibeast, Multibeast and DSDT. Thank you! :headbang:

Please comment if you have any questions, and I will try to help out!

Best regards from Norway!

Updates

01.22.12
- Updated to Lion 10.7.2
- All worked fine except from onboard HD Audio. I went in to single user mode, deleted voodoohda.kext and applehda.kext from /system/libraries/extensions. Then I reinstalled System Utilities, ALC8XXHDA and AppleHDA Rollback from Multibeast 4.2.1. I now got sound again.

- Added a WiFi PCI card - TP-Link TL-WN851ND.
- This has the Atheros AR9287 chipset, so downloaded kext (http://www.osx86.net/view/2046-tp-link_tl-wn851nd_atheros_ar9287.html), and it's now recognized as Airport Extreme.

01.23.12
- Changed BIOS setting from HPET 32 to HPET 64 after advice from stork.

what is your setting of xfx HD6850? is it OOB?

Yes. It works without any problems. No need for additional kexts. - If that was what you meant.

I'm curious why you didn't change your BIOS as per the tonymacx86 official installation guide, the settings of which are appropriate for both Snow Leopard and Lion.

Actually I have no reasonable answer for that. I just didn't. I probably would have changed the settings if installation failed. Could you tell me the benefits of using those settings even if the system runs smoothly as it is?

Consulted with tonymacx86 on your question. With the Sandy Bridge systems, you only need:
  • - IDE->AHCI and
    - HPET to 64

I'm glad we had this conversation because I learned something being just a super user, not a programmer.

Good to hear. :)

Thanks for posting this build- it's a good example of a completed CustoMac Build dual booting. Glad it's working out for ya!

I have a very similar build, except the motherboard and the brand of gfx card (I have a Gigabyte 6850). I was wondering why you didn't install Windows first.

In my experience, I was never able to get Windows 7 SP1 to install if I had installed OS X and Chimera first, on account of the boot sector. It would try to install the SP, and fail. Errors indicated that it didn't have permission to write to the boot sector, so I had always installed 7, applied as many updates as possible, then installed and configured OS X and MultiBeast. Did you do anything in particular to make everything work and update when setting things up in that order?

Thanks alot for the thumbs-up. I'm truly happy about it too, but I couldn't have done it without your forum and tools.

That never occured to me. When installing Windows 7 and SP1, I unplugged my SSD which contains Lion. That way I thought it wouldn't exterminate Chimera. In addition I always kept the SSD on SATA port 0, DVD-ROM on 1 and the Windows HDD on 2.
I did not concider if whether Windows 7 or SP1 would ruin the boot routine as I never read up on it. Luckily it didn't. :)
