Not sure you're talking about the GPU power cables taking up a lot of space, but here's what I found (6 pins and 8 pins) at AliExpress for my own needs...

What a great solution, I never realized these existed. I do have the Sapphire Pulse which has the power connection inset inside the GPU, so its only the cable that blocks the cover.

How do I avoid killing myself copying the PSU mod?

You can ground the green wire from the psu. That was also shown in the video.
