Late last year, Intel quietly released the Socket 2011 X79 desktop chipset with the hexacore Core i7-3930K and the Core i7-3960K. This new platform is the successor to the X58 desktop chipset and Core i7-9xx CPUs. Initially, many enthusiasts deemed the platform far too expensive, however a third lower cost CPU has now been released, the quad-core Core i7-3820. This new platform supports Quad channel RAM and can can support either 32 GB or 64 GB depending on the number of memory slots on the motherboard. I went with the 8 RAM slot board to be able to get to 64GB if needed.

As for the power supply, I went with a 850W PSU as I want to test SLI. The Corsair Professional Series Gold AX850 is fully modular making for a clean install and highly regarded.

If you are planning on using all of the SATA ports I would go with the alternate case. This motherboard is a slightly oversized ATX board and the recessed motherboard mount in the 500R makes it tough to use the bottom row of ports. In my case the 500R works fine as I only need 3 ports.

I have a DSDT for this board and will be adding it to the DSDT Database shortly.

NOTE TO EARLY ADOPTERS: Power management isn't working yet on Socket 2011, so you'll still have to use NullCPUPowermanagement.kext with a DSDT. Because of that you won't be able to sleep the system and there is no speedstep functionality.

Re: MacMan GA-X79-UD5 - Core i7-3820 Socket 2011 Build

Looking good !

Nice one- this almost made it as a recommended CustoMac build- but the Power mgmt issues aren't sorted out yet. I'd bet that Socket 2011 / X79 becomes the next Mac Pro, but they'll most likely use the Xeon CPUs.

This is awesome!

this sucks i just build ed a i7-980x last year and now the new stuff is out

I just built an X79 system about 2 weeks ago, but used Asus instead of Gigabyte. Have to use NullCPUPowermanagement.kext but the latest XNU SleepEnabler works to put it to sleep. http://code.google.com/p/xnu-sleep-enabler

I didn't use a DSDT, but the full build details are here:

Curious to know if that SleepEnabler fixes your sleep issues.

I have the Asus Rampage IV Extreme and would love to know what DSDT patches that you used and what other kext changes that you had made.

Here is my RIVE build; if helpful. It includes DSDT, and is pretty much fully operational:

MacMan : Congrats on that truly beautiful new machine of yours!

Any word on the release of the DSDT you've used?

Very close to building one of these systems myself

This is arguably the biggest reason why I haven't taken the plunge on hexacore goodness. It's maddening to me that the EFI on the X79 motherboards can't do power management on OS X, but the Z77 ones (such as the Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H) can do it and without a DSDT or the extra kexts that say, "Yup, you got a Hackintosh."
