Hey, everyone!

I have compiled a list of hardware which extends from meeting the needs of low-end users to enthusiasts. Anyone beyond this scope (aka extreme overclockers/gamers) should already know their way around which components meet their standard.

On all pricing - $[MSRP]/[Street Price of NEW item]
*Street Price valid as of June 2010*
*Note* The MSRP is a reference to the average prices of each product (to keep a pricing standard), and should NOT be the price you purchase the items at! For an estimated purchasing price, please check the street value of the item instead!

Updates:
07/05/10 - Locked by admin.
06/16/10 - Fixed some links and replaced motherboard due to audio compatibility issues, added Gigabyte's 9800 GT Silent Cell (thanks Lnx2Mac!).
06/19/10 - Replaced a motherboard due to lack of audio/firewire support. Added more CPU and fan selections. Provided a cheaper power supply option for those who will not be upgrading.
06/20/10 - Added comparisons to actual Macintoshes to get a taste of how much money you'll be saving! Created a "Personality Trait" for each build.
06/21/10 - Included a Home Theater Mac build and table of contents. Made the post more aesthetically pleasing.
06/22/10 - Fixed RAM compatibility issues (thanks Coutch!).
06/23/10 - Increase case options. Added non-modular PSU's for cheaper selections.
06/24/10 - Embedded all links. Reminder to self: never hard code in Notepad again.
07/02/10 - MOD edit: Added a warning on the low-end hack case.

So without further ado, a carefully-selected build for each price point:
*If a product is out of stock, any store with the same brand/model will be fine!*

The following components may be freely changed as they do not affect Snow Leopard compatibility, but are the ones I would recommend for the respective price and consumer: Case, Power Supply, CPU Fan, Hard Drive (but keep the Hard Drive SATA), RAM (I don't recommend changing RAM unless you know what you're doing).

I hope these hardware combos provide an idea of what you need in your next Snow Leopard build, or at least give you an outline of what you're going to need to purchase for maximum Snow Leopard support. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I or the brilliant people of Tonymacx86 will help the best we can!

*Note about power supplies: The lower-wattage power supply is recommended if you don't plan on ever having an upgrade path for your computer. If you plan on upgrading in the future, however, please consider the higher-wattage power supply.

Re: Suggested Builds for New Users

Great initiative !

Kudos !

A couple of comments, though:
1) It seems the Mobos have "copy-paste" errors... URLs don't match prices & descriptions
2) PLEASE... Instead of recommending the P55A-UD4 (with the ALC889), I'd replace it with the P55M-UD4 (with ALC889a)

Also, 'Enthusiast looking for a silent build' can check mine ;)

Great work !

Thanks, Tonymac!
Maybe after some constructive criticism and updates, it could become a sticky in the "Buying Advice" section? :D

Re: Suggested Builds for New Users

Jim,

Some more comments:
  • The Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 uses ALC888 and has no FireWire... As said, I'd stick with the GA-P55M-UD4...[/*:m:6q5aiewu]
  • Don't think these builds require more than 500W unless in SLI config,[/*:m:6q5aiewu]
  • The Mugen-2 you linked is the Rev.A (SCMG-2000), which doesn't include the LGA1156 clip... You should link the Rev.B (SCMG-2100).
 I saw it now in NewEgg for $35 + S&H here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185142&Tpk=scmg-2100
Hey at this price, it's a no-brainer for any of the builds with HSF...[/*:m:6q5aiewu]

Thanks, Lnx2Mac - great tips!

1) Replaced the P55A-UD3 with P55M-UD4
2) I kept the power supplies, since they last longer when only at 40-60% load (which is about what I have here)
3) Thanks for the Mugen-2 error! I'm so glad you fixed that, otherwise people will be really mad when they don't have 1156 on their backplates!

I agree they last longer when unstressed... But taking a headroom of 150% is way too much !
At the very least, I'd state minimum power requirements for each build, then let the readers choose.

Re: Suggested Builds for New Users

Haha, alright I'll update that.

Edit: Done!
