I found a nice looking but chunky 17 inch HP with pretty good spec for the price. It would be a shame to leave Windows 8 on it since I am nearly completely weaned from Windows, having used Centos 6 at work and a MAC mini at home for about a year.

I tried to install OSX 10.8.5 using Unibeast 2.1 from a USB stick. (Like others I had issues booting from a USB stick until I created the Unibeast stick correctly. It took about 15 minutes after the progress bar said one minute. I just watched the info to see if the size was still increasing. I also had to select legacy mode in BIOS).

After the Apple logo it just reboots. I tried a few options like GraphicsEnabler = No. But no luck. Using verbose mode it is not possible to see what the last messages are before rebooting. It just flies up the screen too quickly.

Here is the spec of this hardware. It has two video cards, and I am guessing it's related to video.

Intel Core i7-4700MQ (2.4 GHz)
Nvidia GeForce GT 740M Graphics - 2 GB RAM dedicated
Intel HD 4600
Bluetooth, Multi-in-1, HDMI, 4x USB 3.0
1 TB 5400 rpm disk
12 GB DDR3
TrueVision HP Webcam
Beats Audio
DVD-RW
17.3" HD+ BrightView LED (1600 x 900)

Is there some way to capture the boot log so I can identify what area of the boot is causing the issue? Has anyone managed to install on this exact model? I know there are many HP Envy versions, and this one is quite new I think, so it may or may not yet have been built by anyone.

I guess I will try some more boot options related to Intel HD 4700 for now.

Many thanks in advance if someone has any ideas.

I am attempting a UniBeast Install on an Envy 17 j092nr with similar results, no matter what boot flags I try. This would be a wonderful Hack, but I am wondering if there is some BIOS issue I am not seeing that causes the reboot. I am not seeing a setting for AHCI, that may be a dealbreaker.

Have you had any success since? I've got the same laptop and mine reboots aswell..... Thanks! :)

Yes I had fantastic results. :D No more Windows 8.1 But still some work to do.

Here is a rough guide to what I did. I will probably do a fresh install again soon and I will do a more comprehensive guide then.

First, my issues above were actually related to the power management issue and nothing to do with graphics. Just google Haswell early reboot and you will find lots of posts. My solution was to boot on Unibeast and do the install. After completion I rebooted "again in Unibeast", and this time early on in the installation screen, use the terminal to patch the kernel. It sounds much more difficult than it is. I solved it thanks to these posts.

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/to...-locked-msrs-and-hp-envy-15-j063cl-i7-4700mq/

Then I found that I was unable to boot the hard drive install. This was again straightforward to fix. I had come across the boot0; GPT error. It's related to hard drive sector sizes. Same process as above. Boot on the Unibeast installer and launch the terminal early on in the installer process. Then run a simple command with the dd tool. It is described here.

http://www.tonymacx86.com/25-boot0-error-official-guide.html

So now I still had some issues booting from my fresh install. I could now use the spacebar and -x -v switches before the boot process started. This gave me an idea of the issue. -x boots in a failsafe mode. -v is verbose messages on the screen.

For some reason I did not have a /Extra folder on the root filesystem so I copied it manually from the Unibeast USB stick. If you haven't remembered by now, yes by booting in Unibeast again and using the terminal.

Finally I came across the Bluetooth error messages. This was unrelated to Bluetooth I believe. There is a workaround here.

http://quickwebgems.blogspot.ch/2013/11/hackintosh-missing-bluetooth-controller.html

So finally I could boot from the hard drive installation using only -x

I was able to use an external mouse to use OSX now although the trackpad, network etc was not yet working. I used a combination of Probook installer and Multibeast, and a few other tools to get the right drivers installed after this. This is probably not the best way, so I suggest you stick to the standard install guide on this site. I will probably do it correctly on my rebuild.

Working

Display 1600x900 display resolution
Built-in Webcam
Ethernet
Trackpad
D-link USB wi-fi using Wireless Network Utility v2.0.1
Keyboard backlight
Function keys (Fn + key)

Not working

Half size internal mini PCIe Wi-fi card
Power management
Identification of Intel 4600 graphics controller (no kext loaded)
NVIDIA discrete graphics (this will never work I believe so I will see if I can remove or replace it)
Sound and MIC

I have tried for hours to get the IDT Beats audio sound and Intel graphics running, but no luck.

For sound I tried various VoodooHD kext but no luck.

For the Intel 4600 I tried so many different things, but it seems that no setting I use has any effect whatsoever. Most of these settings I adjusted using Chameleon Wizard and selecting org.chameleon.boot button.

Graphice enabler on / off
intel Azul FB 9, 10 and 11
intel-inject-ig 09006601 and 0d220003

So I will probably rebuild using a more standard TonyMACx86 build process and possibly using the downloads here.

Or maybe a bit more reading to understand exactly the sound and graphics issues fully.

I also plan to buy a standard compatible Wi-fi mini PCIe wi-fi card.

I hope this helps someone. Any suggestions on how I can fix my sound or Intel 4600 video would be really appreciated.

PS. Note bene! After updating to 10.9.4 your system will no longer boot, I guess since the kernel you patched is replaced. Just keep your Unibeast USB stick and boot again, and patch using the terminal as before.

...

Easy way:
- use Unibeast4/Chimera3
- patch kernel (http://www.tonymacx86.com/mavericks...-locked-msrs-hp-envy-15-j063cl-i7-4700mq.html)
- boot with flags:
dart=0 nv_disable=1 -v

Note: You could also use Clover which takes care of the kernel patching automatically.

There is additional information likely to be relevant (DSDT patching/kexts needed/etc) at my Envy15 post above.

Hi again

Many thanks for making me focus again. I moved the Nvidia and GeForce drivers to a backup directory in /S/L/E and put back all AppleIntel*

I made sure using Chameleon Wizard that I am using...

GraphicsEnabler = Yes
Intel Azul FB = 11
Graphice Mode = 1600x900x32

It now boots with no special flags and I have Intel video working this time

iMovie now doesn't crash, and I have no more flicker in Safari. Fantastic!

It's amazing how you can go into broken record mode trying the same thing over and over, without thinking about the actual issue.

So now I know how to get graphics working.

I will look at the rest of your link for anything else that could help me with sound etc, and I will buy a compatible internal Wi-fi card.

I may do a rebuild eventually so the thing is clean.

PS I used Macbook Air SMBios which was only one I could find with Haswell reference.

Instead of relocating the kexts, you could have used nv_disable=1.

MacBookPro11,2 would be a better match in some ways (based on CPU).

Sound is working fine now too. I removed Voodoo sound drivers that I was testing, and used the patched AppleHDA you suggested. I also added the missing dsdt.aml into /Extra Same ones you used I think. Here is the link if anyone cannot find it.

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/290687-wip-hp-envy-17t-j000-quad-haswell-10851091010/

I got my two files for sound in the Mavericks ZIP file dated 2 August 2014 10.9_ENVY_17t-j000_Quad_11072013.zip

Sound suddenly started working unknown to me. I actually had given up, but my 12 year old daughter told me it was working one morning :)

Ordered my Broadcom card so now we have a fantastic 17 inch Hakintosh to compliment our genuine Apple MAC Mini running Yosemite public Beta.

OSX looks so much better on a 17 inch display than Metro :)

I use my own patched DSDT. See here for patches: https://github.com/RehabMan/HP-Envy-DSDT-Patch.

But the AppleHDA files/data come from there... You can patch on-the-fly using Clover.
