[Guide] Dell Latitude E5470 (Skylake)

So I'm still trying to get proper CPU/GPU PM working for this laptop. HWP is not a solution (graphics are not as accelerated), at least not for this machine. I'm able to use MacBookPro13,3 SMBIOS but when I generate an SSDT I get a kernel panic (see attached). I can use MacBookPro13,1 with a generated SSDT but idle is too high at 1.4ghz and under load I only go to 2.8ghz (should be a max turbo of 3.5ghz). So I tried changing CPU freq vectors with Piker's script to match my CPU (i7-6820hq; MacBookPro13,3) but I get the same kernel panic. Any help would be great, thanks.

also I just saw this on Piker's blog under 2016 SMBIOS data: "Update: HWP is set to 1 (enabled) in the FrequencyVectors data in the plists."
does this mean HWP is enabled in Mac-A5C67F76ED83108C.plist (MacBookPro13,3 board ID) in IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/X86PlatformPlugin.kext ? If so maybe this is causing the KP as HWP and a generated SSDT should not be used together? Here's the relevant frequency vector code for my CPU, I don't know how to check if HWP is enabled:

I wanted to check if KernelPm was true...

It is, so it rules out that particular kernel code writing to MSR 0xe2. Your panic indicates a write to locked MSR 0xe2... Now the question is only where (kernel or specific kext) that the write to MSR 0xe2 is coming from.

I suspect something in the kernel or X86PlatformPlugin...
 
Hmm well this is a bit over my head but I do get the same kernel panic if I use another SMBIOS definition then change freq vectors (via Pike's script) to those of MacBookPro13,3 which makes me think the vectors are the issue. Did you see my previous post about HWP being enabled in the MacBookPro13,3 frequency vectors code in X86platformplugin?

Yes, I saw that... and I suspect it causes code somewhere to write to locked MSR 0xe2. Because if you look at your KP report, you'll see that RCX=0xe2, and we know that wrmsr with RCX=0xe2 causes panic if MSR 0xe2 is locked... which is most PC laptops.

Probably in the kernel, since no named kext is shown in the KP stack trace...

I don't know what specifically Pike is referring to (as is the case with most of his "discoveries").
 
gotcha...

I'm giving up on the e5470, was getting crazy audio stuttering and dpc latency problems when putting the CPU close to load even under windows, probably due to implementation of RAID and/or intel management engine in BIOS. spent a good 3 weeks troubleshooting and on the phone with dell (yikes!) 10 bios updates in 1 year for this model should tell you all you need to know about the stability of latitudes...dell support and hardware seems spotty, big headache for someone trying to do low latency high res audio production. I'm gonna pick up a 2016 razer blade and see how far I can get with that instead. thanks for all the help :)
