The people from ****** think you only need to install OS X 10.10 and the NVidia webdriver with the internal GPU. Since the webdriver is installed "all" Maxwell-cards should work.

How that? I installed today the 980 and Mavericks doesn't start anymore (white screen during the apple, than freeze). Can you suggest me something?

Same speculation as in this thread. If Apple does not directly support it maybe the nVidia drivers will support it.
This sometimes does happen, but you never know until they actually release the drivers - which is usually after the OS X update/upgrade.

So, for now, still in limbo.

You start your computer with the iGPU turned on, install the newest 10.10 beta. Get into the system and install the webdrivers. Than you can turn on PCIe and may use your GTX 980.

I have an older i7-930 without integrated graphics. Think I could do the following?

* Upgrade to 10.10 with my ATI HD 4870 still in place
* Install the new GTX 970 GPU
* Target boot the hard drive using a Macbook Pro over firewire, and install the web driver?

Does this mean that Yosemite will natively support the 900 series?

With the NDA on Yosemite you will have to wait to find out for sure, just like the rest of us. Until Apple actually releases 10.10, it is still up in the air. Best we can say is maybe, maybe not.

I admit to being a novice, but I also admit to being very excited at the chance. :D

It doesn't matter.. If the webdriver supports it the native support is not really necessary.
