Gigabyte Radeon HD 6670

Status
Not open for further replies.
I have a semi-functional XFX HD 6670 card setup.

I’m running Lion because none of the solutions I found on the forum worked on SL.

With chimera 1.5.3, my card would be detected as HD 6xxx in the System Information Utility and the DVD player would fail to open. Also typing the AtiConfig=framebuffer command at boot appeared to make no difference at all. The only thing that helped me was using the modified files from Shurt. I tried them all and the result were very similar to those of rfhall

Not sure how I missed this thread while searching but thanks to eelHead who referred me to it I also have been able to get by Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 6670 working. I used the zip file that Shurt had attached to an earlier post. I also have this exact card with 1gb DDR3 as referenced by Shurt, however when I tried Bulrushes, figuring Shurt had already done all the work I ended up with a black screen. I proceeded to try each one individually (never tried GraphicsEnabler=No), and on my card I found with the exception of those listed below they all resulted in a black screen under SL 10.6.8.

Junca & Mangabey both booted but still displayed HD Ni40 as the hardware

Ipomoea & Pithecia both booted and displayed HD 6670 as the hardware, both worked with DVD Player. I’m currently using Ipomoea and I’m preparing to start the transition to Lion.

I’ve notice some folks having problems still, all I can say at this point is don’t give up just because Bulrushes didn’t work for you. I spent quite a few hours going through the list and trying each one but now I do have a fully configured graphics card.

Thanks for all the good work Shurt!!!

Most framebuffers would just result on my monitor losing video signal after boot except for;

Junca & Mangabey which would cause my system to automatically load the default ati framebuffer

Ipomea worked ok but setting my default monitor resolution would create a black bar on the left of my screen.

Pithecia (which is the one I’m using) works ok, GB and DVD player both work and my card is correctly detected as “Ati Radeon HD 6670”. But now my computer detects two monitors (had to mirror them on system preferences) and HD movies or HD flash videos show some flikery bars on scenes with a lot of movement. I haven’t yet tried what Martytoof suggests

It's worth pointing out that I was getting horrible frameratres with fullscreen HD Flash content until I disabled AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext. Flash was skipping left and right, dropping frames. Now it's smooth as butter.

Don't know if anyone else with a 6670 is having this problem, but that fixed it for me.

Can anyone please tell me how to disable AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext? Should I just delete it?

Lastly, installing chimera 1.5.4 would again cause a black screen after boot. I must now use both AtiConfig=Pithecia in boot.plist and the Pithecia boot file from Shurt to load the Pithecia framebuffer. Here’s my bdmesg and a screenshot of my system in case anyone can point me what the hell am I doing wrong. I only have a VGA monitor so that might be the source of all my troubles.

HI! Although topic title says Gigabyte 6670 I see many people been asking for other brands.
I assembled a hack for a friend. Long story, to make it short, we ended putting an Shappire 6670 in it. I couldn't get SL 10.6.7 to run full res for his monitor (1920x1080). Only the 1024x768 res was available.
But installed 10.6.8 and then some other resolutions showed up.
When I start the computer, right before OSX starts to boot I se a chimera MSG that says UNSUPPORTED CARD, but I can get to the desktop, I can watch HD videos with VLC, and I've run Cinebech and it gave me something in between 24 and 25 FPS. So it seemed ok.
Before installing 10.6.8 combo update I 've tried to install chimera 1.5.4 as it said it had additional 6670 support, but never could get OSX to boot, as it KP'd all the time, and -x at chimera screen only took me to the grey booting screen indefinitely.
That's why I've tried 10.6.8 combo update.
But a few moments ago my friend called me and told me that Protools doesn't recognize the hardware (mbox 2 pro), DVD Player crashes, ableton live crashes (all this worked in 10.6.7 with an 8400GS but we got 2.24FPS in Cinebench so the whole interface was slow, not to talk about videos).
The build is almost the same as mine (he has 6Gb RAM instead of 12 like me and the 6770 instead of my 5770). I followed Notshy's guide, so it's a DSDT (downloaded from this site's DSDT database).
I've read that maybe I have to put AtiPorts=3, but DVI works ok, I've put PCIRootUID=1 but I've read somewhere that if I'm using an DSDT this is not need... I'm pretty confused.
Any help please?
Thanks in advance.

PS: If there's anyway to get this card working under 10.6.7 it would be appreciated...

Makum, you can delete the kext to disable AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext, or you can just rename it. I renamed mine to AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.disabled and rebooted.

I would recommend never actually deleting any system default kexts for the obvious reason that if you ever want to put it back in for some reason you'll have to scramble to find them.

My friend just brought the computer.
Now, I can solve the DVD player crash using VLC (i think it's a FrameBuffer problem, but I don't know exactly how to change it).
It seems that updating protools and ableton live will make them work. But I see some reports that they run better on 10.6.7 (saw it on an mail list). EDIT: Just updated Ableton Live and it still crashes.... I´m going crazy.

So the real question is, can I get the Shappire 6670 to work under SL 10.6.7?
BIG BIG thanks.

Thanks for the advice Martytoof unfortunately that didn’t seemed to work for me. I changed the name via terminal and then ran kext utilities as an extra precaution before rebooting, but my cinebench fps didn’t get any better (around 34 fps) and I’m still seeing artifacts on HD videos.

I’m sure this can’t be a card defect since I have a dual boot and HD videos run perfect on windows. So I don’t really know what should I try next : /

Hi! Many people in this thread seem to suffer from the improper working of HD 6670. I also had lots of troubles to make the damn card work properly, and still have some issues. But, at least, I have my card work in right direction. I don’t think this approach will solve every problems, but I believe it’s worth giving a shot.

Before further go, I want to let you know that this work-through is totally based on the bcc9’s work, and you may get the further information and important programs from his thread (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=249642&pid=1649902&mode=threaded&start=)

Recently, I switched my graphic card on my rig from nvidia 8600gt to ATI 6670. My mainboard is ASUS P5K-E pro. The problem is that when I turned on, I just get noisy and blinking screen. At some time later, I found out that just switching off and on my monitor removes this problem. But, I just can’t make the damn fb to be loaded.

The problem was caused by EFI string for network card in org.com.apple.Boot.plist which was added to solve the log on problem to AppStore. When I removed the string, the fb was loaded as I wanted with AtiConfig=Bulrushes and AtiPorts=3. Strangely, after switching my graphic card, the EFI string has no effect at all for AppStore login. (Or just login-once is needed?, I have no idea on this).

But, still I have noisy and blinking screen, or worse just blank screen from time to time with fb loaded. Without fb, switching off and on resolves the noisy and blinking screen, but with no DVD player or Nova bench possible. And, importantly, presentation show in powerpoint crashes.

I suspected that when fb is loaded, the definitions on the fb for physical ports will have meaning, and I found the bcc9’s work.

The ati-personality told me that ATI6000Controller.kext for Bulrushes (default framebuffer for 6670) just has display-ports for all 6, but Gigabyte 6670 has one hdmi-a, one dvi-d (I’m using), and one VGA port.

To get it right, I just followed the bcc9’s approach:

Before modding your kext, just back it up:
Code:
sudo cp –r /System/Library/Extentions/ATI6000controller.kext /System/Library/Extentions/ATI6000controller.kext.org

Copying Bulrushes framebuffer part:
Code:
dd if=/System/Library/Extensions/ATI6000Controller.kext/Contents/MacOS/ATI6000Controller of=./bulrushes bs=1 skip=180592 count=96

Converting hex code to ascii:
Code:
xxd < bulrushes > hex

You may use any editor program you are familiar with. I'm in favor of "vi" editor.
vi hex
(The code below is edited)
Code:
0000000 0008 0000 0402 0000 0001 0000 2201 0003
0000010 0400 0000 0400 0000 0001 0000 0004 0106
0000020 1000 0000 1000 0000 0001 0000 0000 0201
0000030 0004 0000 0403 0000 0001 0000 2205 0404
0000040 0004 0000 0403 0000 0001 0000 1000 0505
0000050 0004 0000 0403 0000 0001 0000 2001 0602
0000060

The first three lines specify the 3 ports on the graphic card and have real meanings. The other three lines can be ignored for the graphic card has only 3 ports. Note that the last one's sense id had been changed from 6 to 2 to avoid the duplication.

Reconvert to hex code:
Code:
xxd –r < hex > bulrushes.new

Reflecting your edit on kext:
Code:
sudo dd if=bulrushes.new of==/System/Library/Extensions/ATI6000Controller.kext/Contents/MacOS/ATI6000Controller bs=1 count=96 seek=180592 conv=notrunc

Using kext helper or multibeast, rebuild mkext and reboot with your fingers crossed.

* If anything goes wrong, just boot with option "GraphicsEnabler=No -v"

Caveats: The numbers for transmitter and encoder are not cleared yet. Although, the noisy and blinking screen is gone for DVI-D port, the graphic card can't turn off the display, which means there is no display sleep (buffered screen is shown after goes to sleep). I just put the display down by turning off my monitor manually. And to wake up the display, a key stroke is needed. I think this is related to the numbers for transmitter and encoder.

I did not test this mods for hdmi and vga ports (the numbers are just wild-guesses, and I have no vga and hdmi to test). But, IOregistry reported that the 3 physical ports correctly, but, hdmi port has no sound (this one is also related to the numbers).

If you have a problem with Gigabyte 6670 when the fb is loaded, you may try the above approach.

@streakies - thanks for posting your method.

To speed things up for people - do you think you could post your hex files for people to insert ? Also note that this method may need to be updated as new ATI kexts come out as the position of each of the framebuffers may change from release to release.

Doing some research, found that it seems that AtiConfig=Pithecia does the trick. At least Ableton Live is running and DVD Player too. I still have to install protools... and try some flash & hd stuff....... I cross my fingers.

Finally everything is working fast and smooth.
It was all a matter of frame buffer.
Great resource site my friends!

I have a very strange issue.

My hardware is :
CPU: Intel Core i3-2100
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H67M-D2-B3 rev 1.1 F4
Graphics: Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 6670
RAM: Kingston 4GB 1333Mhz HyperX
Case: Cooler Master Elite 335
Power Supply: Corsair CX500
Optical Drive: Sony Optiarc
Hard Drive: WD Caviar Black 1Tb

I installed successfully with iBoot. Then installed UpdateHelper and 10.6.8 Combo update.
After restart my machine loads only with flags -v -x and only i receive is white screen with mouse cursor. If i try without -x system restarts.
My card device ID is 0x6758 and i think that this device ID is in ATI6000Controller.kext by default (i checked this kext file on real mac)

P.S. Excuse me for my bad english
