Hey all, I'm wondering if anyone has opinions on the best motherboard setup to simplify a G5 hack install I'm doing. I have done a couple PC builds back in the day but have been out of the game for 8-10 years simply using my iMac and work MacBook. Now I'm looking to supercharge an old G5 tower that I had lying around for some gaming but I'm wondering if there are some go-to choices to make fitting everything in the case easier?

I already bought a Mountain Mods motherboard and back-plate adapter online, so that's on its way.

I was planning on getting this motherboard and an EVGA GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost but any reason either wouldn't fit?

Did u order the full ATX tray+backpanel?

Yes, but it says it can mount both mATX or full, so I figure I have a decision before me...any suggestions?

you only need a full atx if you are gonna run multiple graphics cards or expantion cards if you only need one graphics card and one wifi card save yourself some room and some money and get a micro atx

If you want to overclock you need the Z77 chipset. mATX mainboards with the Z77 are just a handfull of opportunities.
Full ATX mainboards do have more PCIe slots and two additional SATA ports.

For the ATX board I am using the Gigabyte UD5H and am very happy.
For my 2nd project (mATX) I ordered the Asus P8Z77-M PRO. But that board needs a flashed BIOS.

So, the UD5H didn't require any additionally flashed BIOS? I am contemplating a full ATX simply because I might SLI the GFX down the road but that of course opens another can of worms...is there a (relatively) straight forward way to SLI with a Hackintosh?

Great info everyone, thanks much!

Just a suggestion for you, the MSI Z77MA-G45 is mATX and has two pci-e x16 slots.

I have one installed in one of my G5 cases. Took OSX like a champ and it's stable as a rock.

Interesting point - I am interested in eventually running a second GFX in combination with my first 650 Ti Booost or 660 depending on what I choose. Do you see any issues running that motherboard with these other options?

MB: Make sure, if you have to flash the MSI board too
CPU: Looks good
Ram: Try to find sth cheaper
PSU: Corsair = Seasonic PSUs, maybe you can take a look at them ;)
GPU: Better go for one graphics card, if you consider SLI be aware of micro lagging!
