Yeah, it is really weird. To get the distorted screen, I must wait in the Clover screen until the video shows on the external monitor. That's the only way I get video out. Maybe that explains why the monitor doesn't show up anywhere as being active??? PS: DP obviously works in Windows so I have ruled that out as well.
