So there's no way I can adjust the fan speeds in OSX?

One easy solution is to just install a fan controller in your case, connect
your fans to it and set the preferred speed manually.

Something like this would control 3 of your fans.

Now, how do I get the Messages app to work? Whenever I try to log in, it gives me an error. Do I need a "me.com" email address?

It certainly seems to work for some people. Part of the problem seems to be that Apple have two levels of Apple ID account. Some people have contacted Apple direct and had the problems straightened out by Apple - this probably works best if you have a real Apple machine that can access the App store/ use iMessages etc. Here is the best link on this site to deal with the issue.
