didn't change anything. I did leave the DSDT-FREE defaults and only choose LAN and Sound. Screen still frozen after startup.

That is wrong. You have to choose the required options for successful boot up.

Simply selecting DSDT-Free will not make the system bootable. You should have to select and install proper kext/options/patches as per what hardware configuration you have.

Search in this forum with your motherboard model number, so that you may can find the correct multibeast selections.
