Can someone explain to me like I'm a small child -- how to get the audio working?

Im in the exact same boat. MSI Gaming M7, says I have ALC1150 and used MultiBeast every which way to install it with no luck... Finally got everything else important working. Just no sound or output options.
 
I can help you, here is what do you have to do:

1. You need the "native" AppleHDA.kext. You find this ONLY in the installation files of you OS (it's the .img from Apple Store or updates). Here you have to go to the folder "Contents/SharedSupport" and you see "Essentials.pkg". You must open this with the program "Pacifist (https://www.charlessoft.com). In the program you go to the folder System/Library/Extensions" and you copy the AppleHDA.kext into OSX S/L/E.
2. You need this (unpacked)
For El Capitan: audio_cloverALC-110.command.zip
For macOS Sierra: audio_cloverALC-120.command.zip
3. Open your EFI folder.
4. Start the program and answer the questions.
