You want to match the sticks. If you match the sticks, it puts them in dual channel mode (which is why they come as two sticks). Dual channel mode is like giving cars (data) two more lanes on a highway. It allows for faster movement.

ok thanks maybe ill just buy 3 more sticks of 4 gigs and have 16 gigs dual channel

Make sure they are the same make and model of the one you are matching the three with.
