Mojave -> Catalina upgrade - "Macintosh HD - Data" partition?

Well, there's been good progress and success! I'm not sure what was the exact contributing factor but I was able to do a clean Catalina install and migrate the primary user account from Mojave, then just for kicks I started over, cloned the Mojave drive and then upgraded it to Catalina. Both...

Mojave -> Catalina upgrade - "Macintosh HD - Data" partition?

Makes sense. However, those kexts in /Library/Extensions are what's currently on my Mojave volume (I can't boot the Catalina volume since migrating the user). I suppose I'll need to move the kexts on the Mojave volume, rebuild the cache, then recreate a clean Catalina install and try migrating...

Mojave -> Catalina upgrade - "Macintosh HD - Data" partition?

I believe all those kexts ended up in the Catalina data partition's /Library/Extensions folder. I tried moving them to a "-disabled" folder, with no success.

Mojave -> Catalina upgrade - "Macintosh HD - Data" partition?

    This is from the Mojave volume that I'm migrating the user account from. musicbot:~ steve$ sudo kextcache -i / Password: Kext with invalid signatured (-67062) allowed: <OSKext 0x7f8c64a2e9f0 [0x7fff9419a920]> { URL = "file:///Library/Extensions/FakeSMC.kext/", ID = "org.netkas.driver.FakeSMC" }...

Mojave -> Catalina upgrade - "Macintosh HD - Data" partition?

And that's fine, I can move them from the data partition to EFI, once I figure out why it's no longer booting after migrating user data.

Mojave -> Catalina upgrade - "Macintosh HD - Data" partition?

Last night I moved all my user kexts to /Library/Extensions-Disabled but made no difference. Since the clean install of Catalina worked and then it started failing after I migrated the user account, it seems highly likely there's something amiss in the user data. Any thoughts on how to...

Mojave -> Catalina upgrade - "Macintosh HD - Data" partition?

That was interesting. I was able to do a successful clean install of Catalina to the newly-initialized volume. I booted into Catalina and used Migration Assistant to move my primary account from the Mojave drive to the new Catalina volume. As soon as it completed and I rebooted, pffft. The...

Mojave -> Catalina upgrade - "Macintosh HD - Data" partition?

I've newly-initialized the target volume as APFS/GUID Partition Map in Disk Utility, and I have a bootable Catalina USB stick made with Unibeast 10.3.0. I'm disconnecting all other drives, so the only visible volumes are the USB stick and the target volume. I'll try to do a clean install of...

Mojave -> Catalina upgrade - "Macintosh HD - Data" partition?

@c-o-pr, I'm creating the clone by first initializing the drive as an APFS volume with GUID Partition Map using Disk Utility. Then I'm copying the source Mojave volume using Carbon Copy Cloner v5. I've also cloned using ChronoSync v4.9.13 backups software. Both methods create an "identical"...

This looks like filesystem is not good. It’s halting and doing a hard shutdown.

Mojave -> Catalina upgrade - "Macintosh HD - Data" partition?

Should the drive "Clone" and "Clone - Data" partitions appear as separate volumes when booted from a pre-Catalina OS? Is that the new "normal"? It looks like the two volumes are what I should expect to see - the boot volume contains minimal system files and the data volume contains everything...

Mojave -> Catalina upgrade - "Macintosh HD - Data" partition?

    * I made a bootable clone of my Mojave (10.14.6) startup drive and am running the upgrade on the clone. * Using latest version of Catalina installer 10.15.7.03. * Made a bootable USB stick with Unibeast then copied the EFI folder (Clover 5119) to the clone drive's EFI partition and confirmed it...

Mojave -> Catalina upgrade - "Macintosh HD - Data" partition?

Why is my upgrade from Mojave to Catalina consistently failing and leaving me with two unbootable volumes, "Macintosh HD" and "Macintosh HD - Data"?

    [SOLVED] Quicklook/Preview issue in Mojave

Thanks cmn699, that fixed the problem! I also installed lilu (was recommended to use with this kext elsewhere) and used KextBeast and Kext Utility to install the kext and repair permissions. Worked like a charm. Thanks!

    [SOLVED] Quicklook/Preview issue in Mojave

Thanks pastrychef. I haven't done any benchmarking but can say that from a subjective standpoint, everything is significantly faster - boot time, time from login to desktop, time for apps to open, etc - when using iMac14,2. Isn't the Quicklook/Preview problem generally attributed to lack of...

    [SOLVED] Quicklook/Preview issue in Mojave

I wonder if anyone can shed some light on the behavior I'm seeing. I have a GTX 660Ti (Kepler) which has always been supported by native OSX drivers. I don't have web drivers installed and I'm not injecting anything for graphics. As of Mojave 10.14, I started having the Quicklook/Preview issue...
