Weighing in the options with $1500

I had a similar budget and really wanted build an system with an X79 motherboard and a 6-core Xeon processor, but the machine needed to function as flawlessly as possible when it went into production. The lack of power management was the only reason I didn't. Good luck and have fun!

Weighing in the options with $1500

If you need -or anticipate needing- more than 32 GB of RAM, you'll need an X79 system. Check out the CustoMac Pro Socket 2011 recommendations. The only downside is that power management is not supported with that chipset. If you need power management and can live with 32 GB of RAM, Socket LGA...

    Mod G5 Thunderbolt

I'm planning my own G5 mod, and if you want to water cool your CPU, I'd recommend getting the G5 mATX backplate, matching motherboard tray from laser hive.com, and a Corsair H80i. They also say they're releasing a ATX backplate with 120mm fan hole. For fans, I'm planning on using a couple of...

    Intel HD 4000 Graphics

I think you just need to add an entry in your org.chameleon.Boot.plist file. I followed this guide. You may need to adjust or ignore BIOS settings if they don't make sense for your motherboard. I found more information in the Official HD 4000 Support thread. I learned in the forum that I had to...

best motherboard for USB2/3.0 compatibility and Thunderbolt support?

Most folks seem to recommend against mixing Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge components, but I have no personal experience to draw from. Since the price difference isn't that much in the US between the I7-3770 and the I7-3770k, I used an I7-3770K, because I plan to overclock the machine eventually...

best motherboard for USB2/3.0 compatibility and Thunderbolt support?

Thanks! I remember when it leaked that Apple was switching to Intel processors and folks were speculating that OS X would be able to run an PC hardware. I was intrigued by the possibility, but I really like Apple hardware, and they had a well-rounded product line back then, so it was just a...

best motherboard for USB2/3.0 compatibility and Thunderbolt support?

You've got it exactly right. A Hackintosh will always be a work-in-progress, but if you stick to the buyer's guide and advice here, you minimize it. For instance when a releases a new OS update, there are trailblazers on the forums who start testing it immediately and report their successes and...

best motherboard for USB2/3.0 compatibility and Thunderbolt support?

Actually, the Customac buyer's guide is one of the strengths of this community. I think the best process you can use is to start with one of the recommended builds and only depart from it if you have a compelling reason. The builds in the Customac guides have been thoroughly vetted and will give...

best motherboard for USB2/3.0 compatibility and Thunderbolt support?

I bought the UP5 TH to future-proof the system a little, so I'm only using one Thunderbolt port to connect a DVI monitor via an adapter. I've also extensively read that hot swap doesn't work. Thunderbolt devices need to come way down in price before I'll spring for one.

best motherboard for USB2/3.0 compatibility and Thunderbolt support?

While I have the the GA-Z77X-UP5 TH, and am very satisfied with it, I agree with Einsteiniac that your requirements describe an actual Mac or a quality Windows machine. Setting up my machine was really easy thanks to the threads you called unhelpful. I spent weeks reading the threads and...

    Alice's Pinkintosh

I was considering a RAID in my build, but for now, I just added a backup HD for each of my main HDs and use Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to sychronize each main drive to its corresponding backup drive every few hours. My drives aren't truly mirrored like RAID 0, but I'm only likely to lose a couple...

    New to Everything

That's good to know. I knew the Corsairs were made by a third-party, but I didn't know about the Antecs. I've read that the hoses on the Antecs a quite a bit better, and leaking is my main concern after receiving one that was leaking in the box. I even thought about putting some liquid gasket...

    New to Everything

I love this motherboard. Here's a really good setup guide and thread about the board. You can find the same guide at hacksbyalfa.com. The GA-Z77X-UP5 TH does have a Wi-fi/Bluetooth expansion card, but the last I read, it doesn't work. I used the Targus Bluetooth dongle from the Customac list...

Change Gigabyte Boot Logo to Apple Splash

Ahh, I see now. I don't see it from a modder's perspective, because my own goal was to make the machine as Mac-like as possible and because the OP's BIOS boot image looks so much like the default splash screen. I completely see the appeal of customizing every possible element though.

Change Gigabyte Boot Logo to Apple Splash

I just turned the Gigabyte logo off in the BIOS so my screen is briefly black before showing the Apple boot logo. Am I missing the point?

A few questions about the Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5-TH

I'd buy the empty case if it's a good price and the case is in good condition. Disassembly of the G5 is the easiest part: ifixit disassembly guide. I wont' be seriously working on my project until after my semester is over.

    Is the customac correct?

Building a Hackintosh is not a hassle-free endeavor, but the hardware items in the Customac lists are recommended because they've been found to work well. You'll still find cases where certain features of a particular device won't work (yet), certain combinations of hardware don't play nice, and...

A few questions about the Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5-TH

If this is your first Hackintosh, I would treat building a Hackintosh and modifying a G5 case as two separate projects. First, build your hackintosh in the cheapest case that you will be happy with. Once you have it running well, decide if you're going to do the G5 case modification. I just...

Music Noobs First GA-Z77X-UP5-TH - Help buying parts for quiet (cheaper?) beast

Gigabyte recommends using a 500W or more power supply with the GA-Z77X-UP5 TH, but I think 500W should be ample with the video card you're looking at since it doesn't appear to use any PCIe connectors. Personally, I'd go with 650W just to have a little more room to grow, but if you've found a...

Music Noobs First GA-Z77X-UP5-TH - Help buying parts for quiet (cheaper?) beast

The GA-Z77X-UP5 TH will support a maximum of 32 GB, and the Customac guide has links for 32 GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM. I installed it in my recent build and it has been running flawlessly. I posted a link to the MB manual in a previous post. If you're not going to overclock, you can get away...
