Well, incase anyone is reading I rolled back to 10.11 and all is well. Turns out it wasn't even almost a massive upheaval. Took about two hours to install and migrate all files and preferences. OpenGL EV shows the same glitch so I guess that was a coincidental issue with the latest version.

That's exactly right. Each official release can only be installed on its intended OS version or build, unless you alter it.
