Started with 10.6, built my hack around a Gigabyte P35-DS3P board with an Intel Core2 Quad 8300 @ 2.5GHz, NVIDIA Geforce GTX 750 Ti. Still using HDDs throughout. Updates to 10.13.4 went pretty smoothly most of the time. I tried going straight to Mojave, but I assume the lack of NV alt drivers...

Update: Just got Clover to boot existing Mavericks install via USB drive. App Store apps updating as I type this. Holy crap. Turning on Nvidia injection in config.plist seems to have done trick. Inserted working DSDT.aml in /EFI/CLOVER/ACPI/patched/ and FakeSMC.kext in /EFI/CLOVER/kexts/Other/...
