I have goten it to work via BIOS on 10.8.5 already, so that can't be the case. It seems like that it can't boot via EFI though...

Sounds to me like you're having problems with the built-in graphics, as well as maybe BIOS settings..? You need to add the HD 4000 graphics injector string before it can boot properly via HDMI or Thunderbolt-to-HDMI.
