I have plugged it in to a (pretty-sure-it's-working) USB 2.0 header on the motherboard - the header works for the bluetooth on my other wifi/bluetooth card, but that one doesn't support handoff/continuity. I've tried a PCI-e x1 and a PCI-e x4 slot, neither seemed to work better than the other...
