I do have an iMac with a valid serial number. Is there a way I can use that?

Thanks!
Len

This is something that Apple is now watching for and would red flag. Very much a big problem as this "would" be a potential security issue when thinking about iMessage and personal information being sent to someone else's computer.

Since Yosemite came out I have been watching and reading about iMessage/Facetime issues, and I am very torn as to what to do.

On one hand, it appears that iMessage does in fact work with Clover, and that would be a nice bonus, but on the other hand, everything other than iMessage is working with Chameleon. My concern is that delving into Clover would put me in a position where I might open a huge can of worms, and not have the support to sort it out.

It really is a catch 22 in some ways. I have 2 SSD drives on my PC and I am more than willing to try, but my concern is that I will destroy an already working system. Even more of a concern is that I will completely screw up my Windows SSD, leaving me having to restart Assassin's Creed: Revelations. :D

I read a bunch last night about clover, and while there are some okay guides out there it still seems pretty vague. I may give it a try, but I am just trying to determine whether iMessage is really worth the effort. I have my iPhone/iPad sitting on my desk in easy reach....so...

On a side note, I kinda wish this website/forum had dedicated sections for the recommended motherboards. If I knew I could find proper, working recommendations for my MB, I would feel much better about giving it a try.

You are absolutely not alone and I think that this is just the beginning of everyone finding their way to this thread. Chameleon may be outdated compared to Clover but with the exception of FileNVRAM it's ROCK solid for the majority of this community and users around the world.

The question that needs to be asked to an expert is does chameleon still hold up and it's boot loader structure, or is this iMessage issue just the first failure we'll see in it's outdated design.

It's a very difficult question. Either stay behind and work with an amazing build minus iMessage, or move forward and relearn the process and hope for the same success and ease of use.

From my personal reading I found that I would have a lot of work ahead of me tweaking my two systems. I fortunately have real Mac's to help with the process but for others it would just be an additional step to work through.

I agree with you. I don't use iMessage much at all on the desktop. I use it mainly on my iPhone and iPad. But I think we all feel a bit cheated if we can't get every minute aspect of Yosemite working. :)
i have my SSD running rock solid including iMessage on Mavericks, and a second HHD running Yosemite with everything but iMessage working.
I would like to run Yosemite on my SSD as it runs much faster, but the iMessage thing is holding me back.

I used to run clover on Mavericks but when I installed Yosemite it would give me an ACPI error and I couldn't figure out the cause, forcing me to go back to chimera :(.

Also I have to run Clover in legacy mode because my motherboard has UEFI but can't actually boot EFI disks :/

Thinks there needs to be a clarification in this thread about iMessage not working. There are three kinds of not-working:

1. iMessage provides a error message saying "an error occurred during activation" vs.
2. iMessage indicating that your Apple ID "[email protected] (your Apple ID)" can't be used to setup iMessage at this time. vs.
3. iMessage providing a message similar to "Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again"

Error Number 1 indicates that the NVRAM is not functioning to provide Apple's iMessage servers with the ROM and MLB information necessary to ensure that the system you are working on is a 'real' Mac. There is currently no fix in chameleon (chimera 4.0), as the FILENVRAM.dylib (version 1.12 or 1.13) located in the /Extra folder does not provide a functioning NVRAM.plist. Wait until a FILENVRAM.dylib is updated. Sorry to say that even when its updated, you may still experience Error No. 2.

Error Number 2 indicates that the NVRAM is functional but a limitation that has been placed on you Apple ID to register your iMessage has occurred. Typically its do to using multiple serial numbers on the same IP address over a short period of time. Once your Apple ID is locked by Apple, there doesn't seem to be a way to 'unlock' it without contacting Apple Care. (Typically this error will reside with Clover boot loaders only)

Error Number 3 typically occurs after you have unsuccessfully tried to activate your iMessage and received either Error number 1 or 2. Rebooting will reset this error, and provide you with access to iMessage to attempt activation again.

Hope this has provided a little help for those users experiencing iMessage problems.

Regards,

Grymmie,

I actually got issue #3 and verified it was from NVRam from my testing methods. I verified every other issue was not the problem (including restart) through the entire fix thread and also attempted other full reinstalls that included a fresh attempt at using NVRAM to populate a plist as well as trying to transfer my plist information from my Mavericks previous build.

Also attempted to dump the NV cache through terminal did not create the plist.

I am hoping I didn't miss anything through my testing but from my situation looks to be the NVRAM issue. I tried with it, without it, and previous build. Would be amazing if it was my fault :)

I actually have all those errors. :/

My iMessage was working on Mavericks and then it didn't so I tried using the updated NVRAM which caused a block on my account. I decided not to call hoping that it would be sorted out in Yosemite. However, now due to the outdated NVRAM, I can't get into iMessage, and even if I did, I suspect I would have to call.

The problem is...I know the reason why this happens, but I don't really have the knowledge to stop it. So, my concern would be that even if I got it working via Clover or Chameleon, something would happen and I would get into a position where I need to call Apple.

I am currently trying to pool together enough resources and files to attempt installing Clover on my extra SSD, but because I can't find any information regarding the risk to my Windows 8 SSD boot, I am not prepared to move forward until I can get some concrete info as to how to make the switch, without losing everything.

On a related note, does anyone have any really well done guides that deal with installing Clover on Yosemite...and even better with the GA-Z87X-UD5 TH mother boards?

Yes but you HAVE to be running Clover for it to work. I'll PM you a link that'll show you how to do it but keep in mind that it also has instructions for Chameleon THAT WON'T WORK!:p
