Building a CustoMac: Buyer's Guide November 2013

Is it possible to put the lowest wattage i5 into the CustoMac Mini (Core i5-4570S listed at 65W instead of the i3's 54W)? Or is that extra 11 W of heat, about 20% extra, too much for the little guy?

It sounds like sound/sleep/built in ethernet works on most of these builds (aside from socket 2011). Is that right?

For now I'm just looking at a CustoMac Mini, mainly since Apple hasn't updated their mini's to Haswell yet. But in the future I might look at a more powerful build. Thanks!

Alrighty, this is what I have:

Intel Core i3-4130 3.4 3 FCLGA 1150 Processor BX80646I34130
MI-008 Tower Black P4 Chassis with 250W Itx Psu+sata Power Supply
Gigabyte LGA 1150 Intel B85 HDMI SATA 6Gbps USB 3.0 Micro ATX DDR3 1600 Intel Motherboards GA-B85M-D3H

All that I want to do is really mess around in Garageband and surf the web a bit, so I won't be using a GPU in this set up and I will be using the CPU's integrated graphics. I do not want wifi or bluetooth. I am willing to drop down to Ivy Bridge if it is cheaper. I have a limited budget, so I need to do this on the cheap. I have everything else that I need, i.e. RAM and power.

I should have no problems with this set up to install OSX, correct? If I am not, I would really appreciate some advice and help.

Thanks in advance for all help and advice.

Johnny

Johnny, you'll have a better chance at getting help if you post in the "Buying Advice" section of
the forum and not in the comments section of the B.G. Thanks !

Thank You, But will the non-recomended one work?

Hello. Thanks for the guide! Definitely jumping to hackintosh. Need a Photoshop + Lightroom workstation (one 2560x1440 display): no gaming at all. Chose the CustoMac Pro with GA-Z87X-UD3H mobo (with i7 4770, 32 GB RAM, SSDs).

Do I need a GPU at all, or will the machine just run fine with Intel internal GPU? I hope that, at worst, I can still buy a GPU 2-3 months later if that's really necessary, without having to reinstall everything from scratch. Have the money, just want to spend it smart. Thanks for your advice!

Yes, it's fine to update apps like iMovie and iPhoto through the normal App store route. For updates
to the OS, you'll want use the combo updates available from Apple, not the ones you get through
Software Update on your CustoMac.
