pastrychef's Asus ROG Strix Z370-G Gaming (WI-FI AC) build w/ i9-9900K + AMD 6600 XT

Thank you, OpenCore software is exactly what I needed to know. Upgrade worked fine, thank you once again!

I read your i9 upgrade experience posts, sounds interesting. Overall my setup (i7 8700K, 16gb ram, RX580 Pulse, 250gb crucial MX300 m.2) is still running fine, but it is a little slower than in the beginning, especially when exporting videos.

Would you recommend any upgrades right now?

Is it a matter of just swapping the cpu or ram or would that mess with my install / config?

And if I wanted a faster / bigger SSD (you recommended the Samsung 970EVO (non Plus), is this still the best choice?), is it a matter of cloning my boot drive or would that potentially cause issues if the new drive is a different make or size?

Then I would probably leave it be to avoid downtime...

If you can find an i9-9900 or 9900K at a good price, it's a great upgrade.

Yes, upgrading just involves swapping the CPUs. No changes needed for OpenCore/Clover configuration.

No, the Samsung NVMe SSDs don't work well with Monterey. I'm now using a Western Digital SN750 (not SE model). I've read that the SN850 also works well but don't have any personal experience with it.

The 94360CS2 came, along with the adapter.

I took off the cover plate of the existing wifi card. The two antenna cables are of different lengths; one will fit the new adapter (the new adapter is significantly taller) and one does not (without letting it dangle loose, which I'm currently doing).

On another note, OMG; tiny cables. Don't remember it being this painful last time, ~3 years ago.

What does everyone else do?

Side benefit: I can now use your EFI files intact, keeping your USB mapping in place. No more BT associated with a USB2 internal port on the motherboard (from when I used a PCIe card for wifi/BT). I'll read back in the thread for details on which USB is used, but (I haven't tried it yet, BT is still unworking, but it'll be fine once I put it in place) this makes things a bit easier - and more standard for t-shooting.

Post LINK:40 has the details. But some of the cables mentioned there are no longer available. I *think* the cable I want is NGFF not PCIE, like so: the cable from Amazon, yes? And this one has a review that explicitly mentions Apple/Hackintosh Broadcom cards, so perhaps I'll grab that one. Oh, and I'll also get modeler's eyeglasses something like this to see the tiny cabling connections.

Yes. Those pigtail cables have the correct connectors.

@pastrychef - this is the first time I'm getting this error, I think its something to do with SMBIOS. I've generated smbios with previous installs but this notification keeps coming up - obviously I'm not even in the US or never mind University Of Cincinnati...

Pick a new serial/etc.

You've happened upon a device serial that's locked to U of C, and so your machine now shows up on their logs (amongst other things).

I strongly suggest doing this sooner, rather than later.

I don't think its worth it. https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i9-9900K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-8700K/4028vs3937

OpenCore EFI updated to version 0.7.7.

All kexts updated to latest release versions except for AppleALC. The latest version broke audio for me.

I really looked hard at the i9-9900k. For $250-$300, it looked interesting.

But then I realized I could get a complete motherboard AND CPU for $275 (NewEgg, i5-12400f & Asrock B660m-HDV) for $275, or $300 shipped to my door, and then I could sell my old MB/CPU for (something - maybe $100 or so). So I have a feeling I'll be selling a basic i5-9400 & H310 combo (works great in MacOS!) at some point, and I'll be keeping my i7-8700k setup (Z370-G) for a while.

To add a little context to this: the Passmark score (a good CPU-only benchmark) of the i9-9900k is about 18,793. The i5-12400 (qty:1, so it will change) passmark is 18,536. So it appears the i5 is slightly slower than the i9 for heavily multithreaded events, like rendering or encoding. However, when you look at the single core results, which are much more indicative of how we perceive performance, the i5 beats the i9 by 22% or so, with 3646 vs 2967. Yes, the i9 has more cores, and _if_ you can find something that uses all those cores, is just _barely_faster than this $300 all-in i5, but for day-to-day usage, single-core speed is what matters to most, and at that, the i5 is noticeably faster.

So --- we'll see if those cpubench / passmark scores hold over the next few days as more results come in.

* i5-12400 passmark performance just changed (4 machines reporting! 19,517 now!) so it's now faster than the i9-9900k with both using all cores AND when doing a single core.

Hi @pastrychef , thanks for everything you do.
I updated with your latest OC 0.7.7
At boot I get these OC messages, after a few seconds the system starts normally.
Is that what you refer to as "broken audio"?
