pastrychef's Asus ROG Strix Z370-G Gaming (WI-FI AC) build w/ i9-9900K + AMD 6600 XT

The USBPorts.kext is configured for the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card to be installed in the motherboard M.2 slot. If you are using a PCI-e card, you will need to change the USBPorts.kext to enable whichever USB port your card is using.
Sure, the USBPorts.kext was already edited. The problem was a broken cable between PCI card and motherboard. After replacing the cable, it works now. I can't believe it...a brand new card with a bad cable.

I had quite an odd experience with Monterey. Really strange, on both my Computers, an original Macbook Pro 2018 and my Hackintosh à la Pastry. I updated both my systems which worked fine. I am working with Samsung QVO 8TB SSD drives for my video editing and never had any problems with it so far.

In Monterey I one of the drives didn't play some of my video clips any more (BRAW). As I have a couple of backups for all my working drives, I wanted to format the QVO 8 TB SSD and clone the backup freshly back on it. But when I tried to delete everything with disk utility, the SSD was corrupt. I just couldn't activate it any more, and everytime I tried it showed a com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter-error. Of course I tried to repair it, but it just didn't work. And it was weird because disk utility showed: a grey APFS Physical Store disk and an Apple APFSMedia (see image attached).

Well, then I switched to my original Macbook Pro and tried to format the drive, but it was the same error. So I got really frustrated and talked to Amazon because I thought the drive had failed. They were kind enough to send me a new one right away. In the mean time I reinstalled Big Sur on my Hackintosh, initialized and formated the new drive with Big Sur and everything went just fine. I was quite relieved. Just to be sure, I plugged the new SSD into my original Macbook Pro 2018 and tried to format it again with disk utility in Monterey. This went fine also, so I tought that my old SSD just had failed. But when I tried to read from it the same strange behavior reoccured and again, I couldn't format or repair it any more.

I reinstalled Big Sur also on my Macbook Pro, got a new SSD from Amazon and now everything works as before: just fine.

So this is the first time a macOS corrupted my hardware and from now on I am really hesitant with any kind of update.

I had quite a few problems with Monterey and one of my Samsung QVO drives (see above). Now the other one of my 8TB QVO drives also behaves quite strange, although I have never formated it with Monterey, I just had it plugged in for a short time. Some of my BRAW clips show strange artefacts and don't play fluent anymore. Now I was wondering if this has something to do with "TRIM"?

My SSD-drives which are connected via NVMExpress show "Trim Support: Yes", but my external SSDs which are connected with USB 3.1 don't show any Trim Support. Is that normal, or shouldn't they have also Trim support?

So far, I haven't seen anyone have issues with 2.5" SSDs. All the ones I've seen that exhibit Trim problems are NVMe SSDs. That being said, there's still a lot unknown...

I've never seen Trim enable for SSDs connected via USB.

Well, maybe it is related to the fact that I had this ssd also plugged into Monterey and it damaged the file system somehow.

I don't think non-functioning Trim can damage the file system.

Hi to all!
Hi @pastrychef

First of all... This build is awesome! Thank you!

I started this build with an i7 8700 CPU and 16 GB RAM to use it at home and also installed a SYBA FW PCI E Card to upgrade it in the future for Studio use in 2018. Since some months ago my Studio iMac LogicBoard broke, I decided to upgrade my home Hack and bring it to the Studio.

Some months ago I upgraded to an i9 9900k CPU, 64 GB Ram and a nvme m.2 ssd (WD Black) and a new PC case to have all my SSDs via SATA.

At the Studio I am using a Focusrite Pro 40 FW Interface and now when i hook up the Interface and start the PC, I get a constant modem like, whining sound, sometimes crackling, especially when scrolling with the mouse, through my active Monitors/Speakers and both Headphone outputs.

My current setup is:

CPU: i9 9900k
mobo: Asus Rog Strix z370-g (wifi-ac)
RAM: 64 GB crucial ballstix 3200 MHz
PSU: Seasonic Focus plus gold 550 Watt
SSD: 4x SSD (Crucial/Samsung), 1x Nvme m.2 ssd (WD Black)
GPU: MSI RAdeon Rx 560 4GB Lite
SYBA PCI-E card with Texas Instruments Chip, 2x 1394B & 1x 1394A FW
case: Cooler Master S400 Silencio

As soon as I unplug the FW cable from the PC the Sound is gone. I also tried with my Saffire pro 24 DSP in the Studio, which brings me to the same scenario.

As I tested this setup before buying the i9 with my Saffire pro 24 DSP and the SYBA on the i7, RXx 560 at home, and there were no problems, I am really surprised and ask myself what it can be, since the only thing I changed in this build is the CPU, the RAM, the M.2 NVMe, the case and the CPU cooler (Noctua)?!

I already tried to figure out if it is a grounding problem in the Studio, but every combination of plugging all power into one socket, different sockets, sockets in another room and combinations of it, etc., did not help.

I tried also different FW cables with no change.
I also killed the ground on the socket of my audio interface with tape, no change. Today I will try it on the PC.

I also deactivated my RX 560 on the PCI slot and activated iGPU via BIOS and also changed the slot placement combo of SYBA and RX 560 with no positive result. I deactivated C-States in BIOS with no result, since I've read it on some forums.

I searched the entire Internet and found a lot of threads with similar problems on tonymacx86.com , gearspace.com and a lot of other places. But most of them had the problem only through speakers and not in the headphones. Until now I did not try to record anything, cause the sound is really annoying and already starts before the bootloader (clover) and MacOS starts, but then gets louder.

Maybe someone has a hint or can help me! I am a little bit despaired at the moment.

It sounds like you might be getting some coil whine and/or feedback loop. There are a lot of things that can affect this and I don't know of any scientific way to diagnose or fix them. In one instance, I got rid of coil whine by replacing the type of lightbulb I was using... Go figure...

I suggest searching google for the above terms and see what solutions others have come up with...

I don't think non-functioning Trim can damage the file system.
No, but Monterey itself apparently. CMMChris in „the other forum“ was also having issues with an unusable file system due to Monterey.

Hi, Today I added a BCM94360CS2 wifi card with an M.2 Ngff 12 + 6 Pin adaptor card. My antennas were not MHF-4 so bought new ones. But the bluetooth is not showing up in the Hack. Is this normal when you only connect the CS2 with a M.2 Ngff 12 + 6 Pin adaptor card? I see PCI express cards with a separate cable to make a connection to an USB header in a regular PC.

Make sure the USB port your card is connected to is active in your USB fix.
