[Success] ASUS Prime Z370-A+i9-9900k Pro Audio Build

Will Asus ThunderboltEX3 PCIe go to ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-G GAMING (WI-FI AC)?
There is no USB-C and TPM connector (14-1 pin TPM).

Sorry for the delay, I was out of town (safely of course).

Some people have had luck flashing their TB card with a modified firmware and using it on a board without a TB Header. You won't get full functionality or speeds but it is possible to get some functions! Its a dice roll. I can link you to that firmware if you'd like.

@CaseySJ shall we?

EDIT: Ordered! Looking forward to getting this one ironed out and trying out TB/USB4 with an expander finally!

Please, can this help to connect my Antelope Discrete 4?
Hey yo! First thing, go ahead and finish updating your CPU in profile.

As for the card I'm still doing test right now. I dont have an Antelope device however.

Asus ThunderboltEX 4 Update

CC:@scottkendall

My goal for this build has been evolving quite a bit. I feel that with the still relevant power of the 9900K and the ability to put a top tier GPU in it make it worth the continued expansion. So, Thunderbolt/USB 4. Lets go.

As of now here's what works and what I've been able to test.

  • Thunderbolt in ICM Mode. For an understanding of this please read @CaseySJ's Thunderbolt Bus Activation post here.
  • Thunderbolt Hot-plug (requires SSDT)
  • USB Functionality
  • Video pass through via USB-C (My monitor is USB-C instead of Thunderbolt so I cannot test that)
  • Sleep is BROKEN
Occasionally, the x16 doesn't survive a reboot but devices downstream do. This feels like a UAD issue.

Some info on the card itself.

The card has 3 headers:
  1. 14 pin Thunderbolt header
  2. USB 2.0 header
  3. 6 volt power connection

As far as I can tell, the 6 volt power connection is needed for passing video and to charge a computer. For normal Thunderbolt activity this is not necessary.

As for the Thunderbolt header we don't need it which is great news. It might however be modded to fix sleep but we'll see.

A note on sleep:

I've learned that when using my EX4 card with Thunderbolt Fully Disabled in the bios settings it still loads in IOReg. However, turning on a Thunderbolt device (Apollo x16 in this case) will cause the motherboard to reboot instantly. I can't help but wonder if there is a bios setting for this. PCI Native Power? Or is this where a header mod would come into play?

If that fixes the issue then it would allow us to potentially use this in other motherboards and also allow us to have an EX3 and EX4 in the same machine. Cool!

Anyways, if you're looking for an effortless dual Thunderbolt port addition to this board then I feel confident saying this is the easiest way. Just keep in mind we're still in ICM mode and possibly not able to use any specific Thunderbolt/USB 4 features, for now!

@CaseySJ Hello Guys,
I bought the PCIe ASUS ThunderboltEX 3 and Asus Prime Z370 A PRIME II but the card not recognized but the PCIe is not seen neither from macOS nor from Windows.
i can't even see it with hackintool or DCPI manager.
I connected the TB card in the PCIEX16_3 port along with the Thunderbolt connector.
Do you know how I can show it?

Hey there,

Are you using the EFI I made for this board with the EX3? The EFI has an SSDT along 3 patches that all work together to make this EX3 work.

If so, please shut down your computer and unplug the power cable. Wait around 15 seconds then turn on your Thunderbolt device. Now, plug in the computer and reboot.

@northbabyboy Hey!
the main problem is that it is not really seen.
I am using the efi you created but not even windows detects the pcie.
I don't even see it on PCIE devices in Hackintool.
it's like it's not connected

Can you give the procedure I mentioned above a go and see if the card shows up then? Often times with this card if anything gets tripped (like an improper shutdown or something similar) then this needs to happen.

The steps are important so I'll list them again.

1. Shutdown computer and Thunderbolt device
2. Unplug computer power cable for 15 seconds
3. Turn on Thunderbolt device
4. Plug in computer
5. Reboot straight into macOS

A great way to see what's going on is to open IOReg and to scroll down to RP21. Thats where our card is located.

Lastly! Double check the bios settings for Thunderbolt as per my guide in post 1.

@NorthAmTransAm

I will try to unplug the power supply for 15 seconds.
at this time i have disabled ssdt and rename.
my initial goal is to see it at least in PCI LIST and not in ioreg.
If it appears in the PCI LIST then it activates quietly
