AMD RX 580 - Any brand is fine?

Hopefully I am not over stepping Raftrix86's boundaries. However, it seems that he has the GTS Black edition. I had the GTS XXX edition (similar from your link) and had problems with booting with High Sierra and Mojave. However, after changing my GPU BIOS to the GTS Black edition (Dated 12 March 2017) using AMD/ATI Flash, I was able to boot with no problems (both High Sierra and Mojave). I have full sleep/wake capabilities, not sure how to check HDMI audio. My BIOS reflash leads me to believe that the GTS Black edition is an officially OOB for High Sierra and Mojave.

Now this is just my speculation, there are other variables to it, such as his hardware build being different from mine. I would say if you decide for the GTS XXX Edition and you have no luck booting, try my route.

Flash through Windows obviously.

PS:
I tried the GTS Black edition BIOS dated 2017-04-10 and I was able to boot with both High Sierra and Mojave, however I get issues with the screen prior to loading an OS (Windows or OSX) and after loading everything seems like nothing happened. By no means I am no expert within the GPU realm, but it was wearisome, try not to use that BIOS.

Thanks so much for this! Worked like a charm for me in Mojave and a day fighting with my XFX RX 580 (XXX Edition). I flashed to the bios using Kukuriks info above to the XFX core edition (it was 2017-04-10 for me - I matched the core and memory speeds) and it booted without issue. Just need to make sure the bios was set to the card and not the integrated display.

Hi,

I have a fully working Mojave since I changed to the proper SMBIOS and using my GTX 650 with enabled iGPU in headless mode. Everything is very stable while grading in Davinci Resolve, but I would like to move futher and get an RX 580 8GB.

Unfortunatelly the Sapphire Pulse is not an option in my country, the Sapphire Nitro+ is a little too long to my case and it is much more expensive than an Aourus Gigabyte Radeon RX580 8GB I've recently found and the latter is short enough as well.

I've read mixed opinion about different brands other than Sapphire and searched a lot, but I did not find a straightforward review about this one. If anyone has the Gigabyte version and have some good/bad experiences (working ports etc.), please share it briefly with me.
Should I get a Sapphire or the Gigabyte will be fine?

Thanks a lot!

The main thing to look into is the ports. How many HDMI, Displayports, DVI ports. The reference models have 3 DP, 1 HDMI. So sometimes those cards with extra outputs have issues with multiple displays porting.

Truthfully I don't know. But what I will say is that I have had very good luck with Gigabyte equipment. So if Sapphire is not available I would say the Gigabyte board is a reasonable choice. I believe its one I would make given past experience with Gigabyte.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Gigamaxx for the quick reply, this is exactly my main concern as the Sapphire Pulse has
1x DVI-D, 2x HDMI, 2x DisplayPort and it seems the most "succesfull" card.
And the Gigabyte AORUS has
1x DVI-D, 1x HDMI, 3x DisplayPort. There are some posts about problems with this one from the past, but seems hard to find any sign of a happy/fully working review.

I agree with with you AnotherNerdHere. All of my 3 hackintosh has/had Gigabyte MoBos and 2 of my graphic cards Gigabytes too. That's why kind of strange I have not found anyone recommending this particular RX 580 although it is on the buyers guide too..

Whatevergreenkext and lilukext should help with the ports. The Gigabyte is closer to the reference design.

well best of luck and it it work well for you let us know. I'd love to hear since I'm thinking of building another hackintosh and toying with the idea of going full AMD. But thats for a different thread. ;-)

Gigabyte Aorus RX580 works fine in HS, Mojave and Catalina. It is what I have in my signature build, replacing the original HD5770.

I am using the Display port farthest from the PCIe pins.

Gigamaxx,
AnotherNerdHere,
Going Bald,

thanks for your thought, your opinions seems reasonable to give a try to the Gigabyte, I'll try to get it.

I already installed WEG and Lilu, it helped to work the Gtx650 in Mojave with headless iGPU in Resolve which is quite picky (I had some freezing before).

Seems good, specially the 30 bit color depth, hope I'll be able to use this card in multimonitor setup, at least with two monitors, or with an other projector.

Thanks, I'll get back if I can put my hand on the card. Full AMD is getting exciting especially for video works, there are already several successful stories.

Thanks all of you for the reply!

At one time I had 5 displays connected at the same time - IIRC I posted a pic of the About This Mac Graphics/Displays screen somewhere here on the forum.
