pastrychef's Asus ROG Strix Z370-G Gaming (WI-FI AC) build w/ i9-9900K + AMD 6600 XT

Sorry, but still so many questions.

I have the ASM2142 USB3.1 host controller too. Should I just ignore USR2 and PRT1-4, or should I include those 5 items, keep them green/highlighted, and export them as well?

And if I export them, they don't count against the 15 port limit, right?

And do I need to manually change the USB2 (HSxx) ports to USB2 in "Connector" field?

And should I worry when I plug in a USB3 stick and it shows up on both HS and SS parts? That changes the Dev Speed listing of the USB2 port to 5Gbps, which isn't possible for a USB2 port; will this mess something up?

All USB ports from the ASM2142 can be ignored. They do not count towards the 15 port limit.

I have never changed anything in the "Connector" field for this motherboard.

When a USB 3 device lights up both HS and SS, that is the correct and desired outcome. Don't worry about the 5Gbps thing.

Once you've plugged and unplugged USB2 and USB3 devices to each and every port, all the active ports will be lit green in Hackintool (it's green in Dark Mode, I don't know if it's any different in Light Mode). Count the number of ports that are green. If it exceeds 15, you will have to choose and delete ports until you are down to 15 or less.

Also - unrelated question - when I jumped to 5.1.7, gST->conin started showing up in the bootup messages, before Clover's pick screen fully loads. What's that?

That verbose text is all part of the FileVault fix. I don't know how to prevent it from appearing. I just ignore it.

In a similar vein, now that I've got Cataling working with USBInjectAll, I'm going to try generating the USBPorts.kext, and replacing it. I've done this before, but I do have one cross-over question: Do I need to remove either or both of these:

SSDT-EC-USBX.aml
SSDT-PMC.aml

and install the SSDT-UIAC.aml that HackInTool generated along with the USBPorts.kext?

No. Keep both in place.

Please see the following link to properly fix USB. It's very simple to do.

I went through the guide , but nothing could help with making ports injected to be visible on IOREG.
I have posted there asking for help with IOREG full report and my EFI. https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...to-usb-port-configuration.286553/post-2066498

Its really frustrating , do you think you could help please

many thanks

Sorry. I just don't know anything about those X299 builds. I looked at the first post of that build thread once and saw that it read like War and Peace and left.

I think your best bet would be to ask for help in the X299 thread. Other X299 owners should be able to help.

RESOLVED: my own stupid error. No UEFI because I didn't do the EFI folder correctly. Sorry for the wasted bandwidth.

Well, my machine has died... or become so corrupted I cannot boot. Right after the ROG splash screen, I get the dreaded "Reboot and insert bootable media..." text. I can get into the BIOS, but then there are no UEFI devices shown to boot from. Sometimes I'll see my Nvme, and when I set it to be the boot device, I get the same failure to boot message. I have several saved User BIOS settings, which all worked for just fine, up until today. As it is now, none of them work at all.

I thought it was a corrupt SSD, because removing it allowed me to boot, but only once. When I tried to reboot, the text screen came back.

Generally, I can see some SATA drives, but none of the drives have UEFI as a preference. I believe they did... something like "UEFI Nvram... Intel"

I have reset the CMOS using the button on the back; I have completely powered off everything and unpluged the machine, and power it back up. No changes at all.

At this point the only thing I can think of is to flash the bios.

any suggestions before I start tearing this thing apart?

None.

If clearing CMOS didn't fix it, I don't think anything will.

Hi Pastrychef

I had a few questions for you. I've just bought this motherboard to use in conjunction with a hand-me-down 8700K and a new 5700XT that I'm going to get. Firstly, thank you very much for the guide. I went for this motherboard because as you mentioned, it has a lot of features like USB 3.1 Gen 2, plus you are very active at posting here so that filed me with confidence!

  1. I'm slightly confused about the USB part of your guide (apologies, this is my 2nd build, with my first build built over 5 years ago!). I will of course follow it word-for-word, but my question is, with your USB-Fix, will all of the USB ports at the back of the motherboard (including the Gen-2 type ones) and also, the 2x USB-3.0 Type -A ports that I have at the front of my case, work fine?
  2. I have the ROG STRIX Z370-G Gaming. Will this present problems if I use your guide as I believe you're using the Wi-FI Ac model built in?
  3. Finally, touching upon Bluetooth, I wish to use things like handoff etc, so can you recommend a good bluetooth card? I don't mind if it's a joint Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card, however, would I still be able to use my ethernet connection for the internet, as I have networked my house and prefer using Ethernet to Wi-Fi (my house isn't good for wi-fi as it's old)
Thank you

It's up to you how you configure USB. Yes, it's possible to have all the ports on the rear and the USB3 ports from the motherboard header enabled.

The non-Wi-Fi AC version is not a problem.

I like to use Apple made BCM94360CS2 cards either on a PCI-e adaptor or on an M.2 adaptor. These are natively supported by macOS so there's no configuring required.
