Full Acceleration for Intel HD 3000 and older NVIDIA Graphics in macOS Catalina

FYI, to answer my own question, yes. The only thing you have to do is download the latest version of the installer, run it, restart and boom, now it boots in 1080P instead of 1024x768! It just works!

The Clover Boot screen and the initial Apple logo are still 1024x768 but now at 3/4th progress bar the screen goes black and switches to 1080P to finish booting. This is the same behavior as in Sierra boot.
  1. Sorta related: do we know if HDMI Audio is possible on the 2011 CustoMac Mini in Catalina?
  2. Unrelated: if anyone knows why the Unibeast USB can boot Clover in 1080P, but the installed Clover never does, please drop me a link.

Just tested on my CustoMac Mini GA-H67N-USB3-B3 - i3 2105 - HD 3000.

1. All you have to do is install the latest AppleALC.kext and Lilu.kext then (for Clover) edit config.plist to change Devices/Audio/Inject to 3, then HDMI audio works for either HDMI port.

2. I'm also having an issue where initially the Clover boot screen is 1024x768, and no hard drives show. If I press Exit Clover it reboots Clover boot screen with 1080p and shows drives and automatically boots successfully.

It seems that Fermi graphics card can only be used for 10.13.6, 10.15.2 does not seem to have a good solution
In fact many Fermi GPUs could cause glitches for High Sierra.

NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS tested and working on P55M-UD2 rig:

By the way my B75MU3B motherboard in the office PC is presumed to be dead during the experiments (unrelated for sure) that I may need to buy another and bring my MacBook Pro to office temporarily.

For macOS Catalina 10.15 Beta and Release

I'm no coder, but at the risk of sounding like a newbie, if someone can come up with a patch for those GPU's, why can't someone come up with a patch for nVIDIA GTX 950/1050, etc? I know there MUST be some Hackintosher who uses a GTX 950, GTX 1050, GTX 1070, etc. who codes.

So maybe tonymacx86.com could put together a funding (via donations) page for some crafty Hackintosh-using coder who would like to get paid for creating drivers for ALL nVIDIA-based GPU's? I would absolutely donate!

Then again, like I said, maybe I'm so code-deficient I'm missing something here as it relates to the actual creation of such drivers?

The problem is that cards like the GTX 950 or 1050 never had native support in macOS. Writing drivers for those cards would be more than a full time job for anyone, even the most seasoned developer and would take many months of work. Whether they could even pull it off is not for certain. It's so much easier to buy and install a supported AMD card. Looks like you already have an RX 570.

To pour some cold water on this.

This patch (and the Mojave patch from the same author, if it works) allows for some older graphics hardware to be used under Catalina (and Mojave) but Metal is not supported. So any software that requires Metal support will still not work with the old graphics hardware and if you need Metal support you will have to add (or replace) graphics hardware with Metal support.

And after a MacOS system update (e.g. 10.15.1 -> 10.15.2) the patch will have to be re-applied.

Do I understand this correctly?

If so, I believe this patch is for really light use on a hackintosh running Mojave or Catalina only. (Hey, Tonymac, do you really plan to use a 8400GS long time with your i5 system even if it "works"?)

And it seems the patch may interfere with the operation of the OS (possibly render it unbootable)?

This is well expected as one of the original co-developers is dosdude1 who had done patches since Sierra. Those patches can work for most of older 64-bit Macs because they bring old drivers back and change the process to allow installing and booting, but they all have to be updated before performing a macOS system update. Those patches also never let Metal work.

As dosdude1’s patches cannot work with Radeon HD 5000/6000 series, there will not be such patch for Hackintosh users.

Yes I posted earlier that metal is not supported and that openCL apps like Geekbench, and Luxmark won’t open or crash at opening. OpenGL apps Uningine and Valley and Heaven do run but at low 4-6 FPS on lowest settings. But these cards in windows would have similar OpenGL results.

It is a good option for people with older systems that can’t afford a new graphics card for now and allows them to get the only new customer available software versions Mojave and Catalina.

Browsing works fine and it’s much better than the clownhouse low resolution of completely unsupported vesa drivers.
