The everything works Asus Z390-I Gaming * i7-8700K * SAPPHIRE NITRO+ Radeon RX Vega 64 Build

First of all, Thanks to @ModMike, and all the others who contributed to this thread!! It made my life so much easier!

I just finished my own build some days ago and so far everything is working perfectly! Also the whole process of installing went super fast and uncomplicated. I only spend about an afternoon to get everything working. (This is by far a personal record. On other hackintoshes I worked multiple days, just to get it in a usable state.)

Anyway, some tweaks had to be made. In the following I want to share the experiences I made and how I adapted the original guide to make it work with my hardware.

Hardware wise I did not made any compromises this time. So I ended up building pretty much my dream Machine:
  • CPU: i9 9900k
  • Mainboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z390-i Gaming
  • GPU: Sapphire RX 5700 XT
  • HD: Samsung 970 Evo 1Tb
  • Ram: 32Gb of some 3600Mhz DDR4 (I forgot which exactly)
  • Wifi Card: DW1560 as described in the original guide (Got it for about 60€ on Ebay)
  • CPU Cooler: Dark Rock Pro 3 (had this form my previous hackintosh)
  • PSU: Some old 500W Enermax (from my older builds. I have this for over 10 years now and it's still running without any issues!)
  • Case: NZXT h210

Here are some impressions of the machine itself. IMHO it looks pretty sick!

I had to do the installation twice. After I got the system running the first time, I activated FileVault, which destroyed my installation. So I had to do it again. (In my first approach, I installed Mojave without DGPU first, upgraded it to Catalina and then installed the 5700 XT. Cant remember everything in detail)
On my second run I tried to improve the process by integrating the knowledge I gained during the first installation. I ended up with a pretty simple way to directly install macOS Catalina:
  1. Download MacOS Catalina from AppStore (has to be 10.15.1 or higher, for support of Navi/5700 XT)
  2. create Catalina usb installer, following this guide. (stop after 14.)
  3. replace the EFI folder (in EFI partition on USB stick) with the one in CAT-DGPU-EFI-Salabasti (attached below) (Basically I ended up using the files from the original CAT-DGPU-EFI.zip, in addition with the stuff described here.)
  4. Configure Bios settings as described in the original guide.
  5. (maybe optional) Remove the graphics card (I had strange glitches in the installation gui, when I used the DGPU)
  6. Install macOS Catalina
  7. Disable SIP (using clover method)
  8. Install clover (I used R5099)
  9. Replace the EFI folder of your local EFI partition with the one in CAT-DGPU-EFI-Salabasti (attached below)
  10. Done!
For activating continuity I also refer to the original guide.

I did not try to activate FileVault again yet. So I can not say if this was a random error or if there is a bigger issue. Besides of that I could not find anything else that did not work for me.
The only thing that is a bit annoying is the loudness of the Sapphire 5700 XT. Even in idle its pretty noticeable. But I will most likely switch to some water-cooling solution (only for the gpu, love the dark rock) in the near future, which should solve the issue.

Thanks again to everybody who contributed to this awesome piece of knowledge. If you have any further questions regarding my build feel free to ask! I am happy to help.

Salabasti
Hello @Salabasti
I am following your guide, my configurations are the same you (only diffirent with CPU yours is i9-9900K mine is i7-9700).
But my Hackintosh after logging in to the main screen desktop, the CPU fan will spin very fast, after about 1 minute the machine will automatically shut down and restart. I have used Clover_v2.5k_r5097.
I am doubting that my Clover version or my installation of Clover is different from you, which made to conflicts. So can you give me Clover version information and how you setup it?
Thanks!

Hey guys! I was comparing the config.plist files for Mojave and Catalina y/day, and noticed quite a lot of changes. Any advice on how to handle the changes in the config file if I want to update to Catalina directly from App Store? Or is it a better idea to just do a clean install and then a time machine restore? Can I just use the Catalina config.plist file temporarily in Mojave and then do the App Store install?

Thanks!

To be honest, I doubt that your problem is caused by Clover. Since you can boot to the desktop, Clover already did its job, I guess. I think it's more likely that some BIOS settings are messed up or some kexts are wrong. But it's just a guess.
Can you post some error messages? When you boot with '-v', I think you should see some messages after the system is crashing.

But, anyway, I used Clover r5099. But I can't really remember where I downloaded it from. To install it on the hackintosh HD, I had to disable SIP. You can do this using some options in the Clover menu. (Using Clover on your USB drive, of course.)
Did you already install Clover to your hard drive?

@tien619 Did you enable XMPI or XMPII in your bios? You might need to disable it.

I have the exact setup - Asus z390i + i7 9700. Not the K version.

My hackintosh hangs after a while when I enable XMP for the RAM to run at 3200Mhz. When I disable XMP and allow it to run at 2666Mhz, everything works fine. 9700 is not able to handle RAM at 3200mhz while the 9700K can.

Made a mistake. I knew the K means the processor is unlocked and over-clockable, but I thought 3200mhz is the default supported speed!

Is anyone able to help? I would like to run the RAM at 3200Mhz. The longest I can get it running before the system hangs is 1-3 hours.

@tien619 Perhaps this could be hardware related? What is your CPU temperature doing before the machine shuts down?

I have XMP-I profile enabled and it is working fine for me. Got my RAM at 3600MHz and overclocked my 9900K to 4.8GHz.

Maybe some voltage issue? Higher clocks require higher voltages (right?). Also, if you consider 'silicon lottery' your XMP-Profile might not be 100% correct for your hardware. But not sure, just an idea.

@Salabasti May I know what's the brand and model of the RAM that you've purchased?

This is the full description of the kit:
32GB (2x 16384MB) G.Skill SniperX Urban Camouflage DDR4-3600 DIMM CL19-20-20-40 Dual Kit

Got it for about 140€.

@ModMike Thanks for the exceptionally clear guide. Which I have followed to the letter (almost).

I'm trying to install Mojave, onto...

The hardware
ASUS Rog Strix Z390-E Gaming mobo
i9-9900K
Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 3200 MHz, DDR4, DRAM 2x16GB
Sapphire Radeon RX580 Pulse GPU
2x Sabrent 1TB NVMe drives Currently not installed due to previous install attempts failing at error appearing to relate to non Apple NVMe - but the final goal is to run Windows on one and Mac on the other.
Currently attempting to install to to an old HGST 500GB 5400rpm drive (probably came from an old mac book)
Fenvi FV-T919 wifi/bt card currently not installed whilst trying to resolve basic setup.
Corsair H60 Water cooler
Corsair HX750 PSU
NZXT 510 case

Steps I've followed
From the section titled BIOS Configuration:
I've followed (almost) everything to the letter including resetting the CMOS by jumping the mobo pins, then updating the BIOS. This was the first guide (I've tried 4 or 5 now) where I was able to find every BIOS setting referenced - super clear!
The only thing in this section that I didn't do was steps 17. & 18. Disabling the boot logo and the Post Report time.

From the section titled Installing Mojave:
I've followed EVERYTHING to the letter here, I even went as far as printing these two sections out and ticking each item one-by-one. Up to step 16 where everything stops...

Where I'm stuck

When I choose to install Mojave from the OSX Utility tools (whatever its called) the continue buttons greys out and nothing happens. If I leave it long enough (~30min) the system goes to sleep and wakes again if I press the power button.

This is a 'screen shot' (sorry I tried to save the actual text but it told me I was denied permission to do so) of the installer log from the utility tools.

Any help much appreciated - thanks.

BTW Not uploaded EFI file here as it should be identical to the DGPU-EFI.zip I downloaded from your guide - shouldn't it?

@shcraigen its always best to look for a guide written to support your exact motherboard if possible, the I and the E are both Z390 chipsets but the boards themselves can vary enough you may run into problems if you don't. The other issue is if you ask an owner of an i Gaming questions about an E Gaming board they have no way to verify or test fixes regarding whatever issues you are having. My best suggestion is to google ASUS Rog Strix Z390-E Gaming Hackintosh and see what comes up.

I found this link on this site and there maybe others here, certainly there are other sites that may help you as well.
