Okay, so now I'm going to be overly aggressive and I will apologize in advance....but, I would highly recommend that you sell the GTX 1080 on ebay and save yourself an enormous amount of headaches. Then use that cash to buy an AMD....of some sort.
You are TOTALLY reading my mind! After I posted that, I got to thinking: Maybe I need to Craigslist that nVidia card & get a nice ATI card??!! Sounds like another RX580 *maybe* is not the best choice (if I"m reading @kgp's OP correctly). I'm certainly open to suggestions...and have a bunch of Amazon gift cards that I got for Christmas burning a hole in my jeans :)

I use to have a similar issue 7 months ago when I first build my rig. It drove me nuts. I changed everything ( even the mobo as everything was brand new ) to locate the issue of freezing & bios reset. Don't ask me why but the problem end up being one of the memory stick being defective. I lowered the system to run with only one 8gb memory at the time until I found the sucker..Never had a crash since I replaced that bad ram stick. Good luck.

You may be right.

It seems when I try to use XMP it has issues.

Going to test this weekend to see if it's RAM issues or I might have to RMA the Designare EX (or just buy a new one I can't have downtime).

Straight out of Ben's Bargains.......https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=14-202-293&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-BensBargains.com (Internet Brands)-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=404255&SID=fe2.4.2DtD.0.1GCHQz.1h9d5l.Ab.AW.3

OR: Vega 56: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...=vega 56&cm_re=vega_56-_-14-131-740-_-Product

And, here's the point: if you are working in production, you cannot afford instability when you are trying to deliver a final audio track or a video, and you have a deadline. It is not possible in that scenario. You must have a stable system when you are in production - there's just too much at stake in that case

Oh, trust... if you've been around here for any length of time & followed any of my pro audio app posts, you KNOW that *all* my rigs are "production" (I get paid good $$ for the work I do on these machines). And I'm a HUGE proponent of "...if it ain't broke, don't fix it..." and "...don't be in a hurry to up grade on every point release, as your apps & plugs may not be compatible for a while." :)

So, I agree with kgp about the RX series. I just see some people struggling with them - for some they work, but others struggle with them. Maybe a good compromise would be a Vega 56 - talk with @pastrychef about his MSI Vega 56, for instance.....

Once I configured my Vega's with VGtab (they are Sapphires after all - and that means they are high quality and pretty easy to work with), I haven't touched them and that's through several upgrades......I just see some folks constantly tweaking their RX series cards.....

Finally, there's nothing wrong with having the additional graphics power a Vega will give you.....

Wow - thanks for those suggestions! So you think another RX580 would be OK? Or should I go for the gusto & go Vega?? ("what goes on in Vega - stays in Vega" >..??)

I'm fortunate to have a MicroCenter here in Dallas - they have a couple open-box units of this Vega GPU:

I might go down & check them out. Here in TX we have a sales tax-exempt status for music & video producers. So no shipping & no tax for me at MC.

Okay, a response like that got me.....:headbang:.....and you're right to some degree that if you're just doing Audio work, you may not need the power of a Vega 64.....just don't ever say that to a video editor......

LOL - but I **am** a video editor too BWAHAHAHAAAA!! My latest suite of projects use this camera, & hence the need for an nVidia card (the PC software for stitching & device mgmt requires minimum GTX 1080). So now that the 2 glasses of wine from dinner are wearing off, I need to actually keep the GTX 1080 for when I run the proprietary Samsung software in Windows 10 (separate SSD), and then use the Vega for my audio work. **sigh**

Well now, as an Editor, the graphics power of the Vega becomes much more important. That makes things different and a Vega, in that case, is a much better choice. The better Vega 64's are about the equal of a 1080. A Vega 56, a good one, would be close.

Which to pick? A good RX series or a Vega? Just take a look at my builds and you'll see where my bias might lie.....VR can stress your GPU and CPU pretty intensively.....

Thankfully I'm not actually running the VR headset off the GPU - just for some reason, the developers for the 360 Round software editing & mgmt apps decided that the rendering horsepower needed to come from an nVidia chipset (I've tried an ATI, and no-go).

Once I stitch & do minimal edits in the Samsung Win10 apps for that camera, I export to MP4 (ugh) and then fly into Final Cut Pro for any more serious edits, color correction, etc. THEN the Vega 64 can really shine!! :)

ATI? Didn't you mean AMD? Showing our age, aren't we? I've run VR off of my Vega, and at the school where I used to work, we ran VR off our Mac Pros and it worked just fine.....
