ASUS ROG STRIX Z390-I Gaming Motherboard specs

Little update, I put a RX580 in the system I had the Strix Z390-I, and audio works now! Shutdown and sleep are the only 2 things left :)

Another strange thing that happens is when the computer sleeps/shutdowns, goes into a black screen (the screen doesn't turn off), but my entire network goes down, and it goes back up when I shut it down manually.

Huh?? Weird! Keep in mind that WhateverGreen can help get HDMI/DisplayPort audio working but it won't help with motherboard audio. AppleALC is what gets motherboard audio working.

Just tried again, the audio disappears if I disconnect the graphics card. I think this might be a misconfiguration of the usb hubs, because also the bluetooth hub disappears.

It looks like when the pci-e card is installed, the SSDT tables change, the USBs are defined now in a SSDT-5 instead of SSDT-4

Wow. Really weird!!

Try to use Clover Emulated NVRAM drivers instead of the native ones like for H370, B360 and H310 boards.

So I just picked up the Asrock Z390 Phantom Gaming ITX after my Asus Z370-i decided to kill one of its RAM slots (or maybe I killed it?). I almost replaced it with the same but figured I should get new vs old in anticipation of the new processors... Originally I had purchased the Asus Z390-i but quickly realized that the IO shield/heatsink would not allow me to install a legit Apple WiFi card/adapter (height was an issue) and returned it. The important stuff is working pretty well from my previous Z370 install (which @pastrychef - your guide is the bee's knees) which I literally just transplanted the disk into the new board and it fired right up.

Where I'm at:
  • Shutdown/Restarts are boinked as @vincek8s mentioned - tested new Clover, new installs, tons of BIOS changes and config edits. Nothing works. I've spent a good bit of the day trying to get it worked out and haven't gotten anywhere.
  • Sleep seems to be working? I haven't done a major amount of testing on this but cuing it via the Apple menu puts it in sleep, display shuts off fine and it wakes back up without an issue. I'm pretty anxious for a solution to the shutdown bug though... Seems maybe something the Clover team has to fix. See here for verbose screen on shutdown.
  • I don't mess with Audio, I use a USB DAC - I am more than happy to test for others but audio not of personal concern so I haven't spent any time on it. I did however notice that I wasn't getting DP Audio from the GPU(Sapphire RX 580)/monitor which is something I would potentially use from time to time? @pastrychef @vincek8s - any ideas?
  • Next step is to create a USB SSDT. ATM I just have usbinjectall running with the 10.14 patch.

iGPU with quick synch and Apple ALC are very important to have working.
Not being able to shut down is an issue but if Quick Synch and iGPU per se are not working then it’s an issue as it means these boards cost Eu 100 more (for a RX560) and they won’t perform well in video where H264/H265 are involved for FCPX and Da Vinci.
Integrated audio is again very important.

Thanks.

I also believe that the shutdown issue is something that will eventually be resolved by a Clover update.

It's good to hear that sleep is working well, this is a very important function for me since I leave my computer turned on 24/7 and rely on sleep a lot.

For audio to work on most Z370 motherboards, it's just a matter of installing AppleALC and injecting the correct audio-id. I would assume the same would work on Z390.

For the most part, HDMI/DisplayPort audio on Z370 is handled by WhateverGreen. The only reason why it would break in Z390, that I can think of, is somehow the HDAU device-id somehow changed.

When you begin working on your SSDT for USB, I would be interested to see if your USB 3.1 gen 2 ports are part of the XHC branch in IORegistryExplorer.

Have you already installed your Apple Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card? Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth arer working as expected?

Sound good. And does the Apple WIFI card/adapter work on this board?

By the way, it seems Apple is releasing new Macs on Oct 30. Maybe we get lucky and Z390 chipset finds its way into one...
