[Success] GIGABYTE Z370 Gaming 7 + Intel Core i7-8700K + RX 580 + (2x) Dell P2715Q 4k @ 60Hz

I actually got back on F10 and tamed the beast. Some googling i realized why I could not get any of settings off auto. It's cause they don't have drop down menus. I was hitting enter, up and down arrows and getting no where. But you need to type numbers or hit + or - key for those areas.

So I got rid of auto and went to 50x package multiplier and set custom cvore and ran prime95 and aida stability tests in windows to refine until I got lowest possible vcore while maintaining stability. Now not only are temps back to F7 values while running F10, i got temps even LOWER than F7 values cause my cpu is stable at some pretty low vcore at 5ghz. I could probably push it to 5.1ghz actually but for time being I'm making a new baseline temperature for 5ghz so I can get a feel for this setup. Plus make sure it passes my 2 week, 4 week stability tests of general use. you can run aida for 2 hours and not crash. then crash opening textedit out of no where if a OC is only 99.97% stable. no test as good as the test of time.

Thanks for the info @MysticalOS. I will look into this F10 further down the track. Also I know it could be different for everyone, but what Vcore settings did you arrive at?

As an aside, I have discovered since the reversion back to F7, that my sleep is now working fully... well at least today!
I have changed nothing other than the BIOS... at least from memory nothing. Edit: Actually, I had cleared the ~/Library/Cache directory of all files yesterday for another reason, but not sure if this was the reason or not.

My sleep was working fine in HS 10.13.6, but has been flaky in Mojave 10.14.0 and was only putting the displays to sleep, the CPU, fans, and RGB all still working away. It would wake from this partial sleep if I used my Bluetooth mouse to wake it.

Long story short is whilst sitting here talking to a friend, it went to a complete sleep all by itself as I had set the displays to turn off after 5 minutes and to let it sleep. I have rebooted and tested sleep several times since all good.

Don't understand why, but I won't complain either!

I don't seem to have any GPU fan control on my RX 580.
The fan always seems to be off, and the card is getting hot.

If I reboot the machine in windows, the fan kicks in right away.

Any pointers?

@EdwardVH my fans are on and temp hovers around 51C in macOS. I used to have two RX 580's and both worked well regarding temps etc.

Very hard to diagnose your issue, but I'd look at the latest version of Whatevergreen.kext look here for the latest release and here on GitHub for the readme etc. Please keep in mind that it now replaces a lot of other kexts eg Shiki.kext(?) etc.

Also... please see this 'An idiots guide to lilu and it's plugins' it is IMHO the best way to get various issues fixed now, and the utility app that he mentions is a winner, saves a lot of mucking around and obsoletes other methodologies. I'm using this guide on my machines now.

If you are still having issues, you might have to start a thread on the post-installation graphics forum.

I believe F10 also updated IME, rolling back to F7 might have left updated Intel Management Engine firmware? just a wild guess. Not sure.

Hey JB, seems to be doing my head in, just want fans to work on the GPU, am I reading this right that I need to flash the bios on the RX580? Is there a simple way just to set the minimum RPM?

Yes I saw that it includes IME, and I updated IME when when I updated and then reverted the BIOS.

Also since posting about sleep working, I have confirmed that Powernap is fully working. It has woken up done a backup and gone back to sleep like a well behaved child... crossing fingers it stays that way. I also read that some real Mac users are having problems with sleep and Mohave, but I’m uncertain as to whether it’s bugs or configuration issues.
I’ve also reinstated display brightness on my two Dell monitors using my F1 & F2 keys and this NativeDisplayBrightness app.

Not sure where you read that you have to flash the BIOS from? Maybe my conversation with MysticalOS which is just about the latest version of the BIOS for the gaming 7 motherboard.
Have you tried booting of you UniBeast 9.0 pen drive (USB stick) to see if fans are behaving? This would show that it’s either a hard issue or a software issue as it will not load any thirdparty Kexts unless you have also put them in your UniBeast drive, and if this shows your card now working with fans on, that is something maybe in how you have configured the Kexts on Mohave.
What brand is your RX 580?
And how hot is it getting?
What sort of GPU intensive task are you using to stress your GPU?

Hey J.B...

1) The card is a MSI RX 580 Gaming X 8G
2) Not entirely sure. I thought HW Monitor was looking at the GPU die, but after running a stress test software, not so sure that's the right sensor.
3) I tried running Heaven GPU stress test software.

What's interesting is that as soon as I start the stress test, the fans on the RX 580 fire up right away. And the temp seems to be different from what HWMonitor is reporting.

P.S. running 10.13.6, not Mojave.

Weird.

Mmm @EdwardVH I'm not 100% sure what's going on....

If none of the below helps you out, let us know, but it's getting harder to help you without any files, etc., from you. So if possible maybe include your config.plist, etc. This should be a 'no-brainer', but as you say, it's 'doing your head in'. This is something I can definitely relate to after my 44+ years in the electronics/software industries, but usually it's a very simple reason, not a complex one, you just have to find it before it does you in! :banghead::lol:
  1. It's good that your fans are firing up, but I'm pretty sure that they are controlled by the GPU it's self, just so it doesn't self-destruct whilst waiting for the system to tell it to turn on the fans. Others more knowledgeable than me could tell you what's going on there.
  2. Can you tell me what the HWMonitor is reporting whilst it's idle and also when you crank it up?
  3. I've run my RX 580 since Apple introduced support for these AMD RX xxx cards, and in the early days the GPU temp was not being reported, but the clever guy & gals soon fixed that, so having HS 10.13.6 is not an issue.
  4. Make sure you are using the same if not the latest kexts.
  5. Also, make sure you are loading only kexts that only have to be in the '/EFI/kexts/Other' directory for a successful boot, and all others in /S/L/E and that you have updated the kernel cache by running the following commands, and fixing any errors:
    Code:
    sudo touch /Library/Extensions
    sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions
    sudo kextcache -i /
  6. I'm not running HWMonitor, I'm running 'iStat Menus', and the following kexts that I injected from the Unibeast 9. installer pen drive. The GPU Temp is reported as 'GPU Die' this the name that FakeSMC_GPUSensors.kext reports to the HWMonitor app or in my case iStats Menu.

  7. In my /EFI/EFI/Clover/kexts/Other I only have these kexts.

  8. If you run System Information/Graphics/Displays... you should see if macOS is reporting that it is an AMD RX 580... like mine below. It would be interesting to see if the MSI card that you have is recognized by the Vendor 0x1002 and the DeviceID. I've had a look inside the FakeSMC_GPUSensors.kext's Info.plist and it appears it is looking only for the vendor ID 0x1002. Could you confirm that you have this ID?
