hi i am taking the plunge to get to high sierra. i do not have access to a mac or a hackintosh unfortunately. i have bought the retails SL dvd from apple. i plan to follow the hardware purchase guide for customac budget atx april 2018 (with 8gb of ram, i3-8100, gigabyte HD3 and samsung 250gb SSD).

reading the threads here, will i just not even get started as i intend to just utilise the onboard video of the i3-8100?

would i have to (temporarily) remove the galax 1060 3gb video card in my PC and plug it in the hackintosh customac to at least get snow leopard to install first? and then after high sierra has installed, remove the 1060 card and try and get HS to recognise the on board video?

hope this makes sense.

Sadly this will not work as there is no support for your Coffee Lake technology in Snow Leopard.

darn.

so... it would seem then i will have to install a video card - say gtx1050ti (i don't play games and just need a card to get past the SL install) - would that be ok with the SL install? i.e. will SL give any problems with the card?

You have completely missed the point - Graphics is not the problem.
Your motherboard chipset and processor are unsupported in Snow Leopard.

crickey... worse news!

i read this installation guide again:
https://tonymacx86.blogspot.com.au/2010/04/iboot-multibeast-install-mac-os-x-on.html

it doesn't mention the maximum [sic] system requirements to get SL running.

so in my situation, what would you suggest i can do to get things started? (apart from the obvious in that i need to find a mac somehwhere somehow...)

The answer is to use supported hardware.
Some have bought second user HP desktops that are cheap and easily hacked.
You could use one of those to obtain the desired OS and then sell it on once it is redundant.

That is because it is an old guide - Look at the date - Monday, April 12, 2010 - No such thing as Coffee Lake back then.

Start here...

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Refurbis...-A-2-Duo-P8600-2-4GHz-OS-X-2GB-250GB/45584715 for $168.99 US

Then upgrade it to 8GB or 16GB of RAM and download High Sierra. You will then be able to proceed with your Coffee Lake build if you still need it. Throw an SSD in the little white gem and it makes a really decent laptop for basic needs.

right. ok. i think i will have to get an el-cheapo mac mini, do the unibeast thing, and then sell the mac mini once i am done with setting up the bootable USB.

You may need something like http://www.usgobuy.com/en/us-online-shops/walmart.html to purchase from Walmart in Australia. I have no idea what you'd need to do or who to trust. Try to find the "Refurbished Apple Macbook 13.3" LED Laptop MC516LL/A 2 Duo P8600 2.4GHz OS X 2GB 250GB" from Amazon or what ever markets serve you.

Good plan - Don't forget to come back and update this thread when you succeed.
