Highpoint 2720SGL WORKS Perfectly in a Hackintosh

Just an update from me.

I was recently given *yes, given* two (almost new) HGST 6TB drives for my studio setup. They needed SAS, so I purchased the 2720GSL for my 10.11 hackintosh pro.

The install went fine and somehow I was able to fit all the drives (more than 30TB in total) into my machine. But when it came to turning it on, I found I had to manually install the software to get the management console to play ball.

However, with 10.11.2, installing the web software from Highpoint mentioned earlier in this thread caused a KP. I ended up installing manually using Pacifist, and that allowed the install to work without any problems.

Now rocking a 1TB four-way RAID0 setup with 900 MB/s write, 1400MB/s read, and a 12TB two-way RAID0 with about 500 read and write. :)

Nikki.

I'm in the same exact situation as you are. I cannot get the Highpoint WebGUI to install without causing an immediate KP. You mention that you installed it manually using Pacifist - can you tell me exactly how you did this?

I got my 2720GSL yesterday and powered it up with 6x 1TB WD Blue in RAID 5 in El Capitan 10.11.6. Installed newest BIOS (1.14).After Initialization, which took about 12 hours, I changed all "External" to "Internal" in HighPointRR.kext and HighPointIOP.kext (showing the drive as "Internal" now) and formated the drive with disc utility and now I got a superfast RAID5.

READ Speed ~800 MB/s
WRITE Speed ~760 MB/s

I just installed it on my build with 10.12.4 installed. It's working fine for me running a 9TB Raid 5.

Not sure if it mattered but I installed the the WebGUI before plugging in the card. Had no problems and the WebGUI allowed me to setup my RAID in about 4 clicks.

As someone mentioned earlier in this thread, the RAID drive shows up as Ejectable. I've been searching but can't seem to find any way to make a drive un-ejectable.

I'm a little confused about the details here. My plan was to run SSD SATA drives in a RAID 5 or 6 configuration, but according to this article (specifically the last few paragraphs), the absence of onboard cache on the 2720SGL is detrimental to performance in Raid5/6. Does someone have any experience to the contrary?

Intalled 2720sgl with three 8TB WD Reds. Working great for me. OS recognized the drives with just plug n play. I installed the WebUI and then upgraded the BIOS which is at v1.14. I'm running on MacOS 10.12.1.

This was a great thread and answered questions for me. Thank you to josu86 for explaining how to show disks as internal. For anybody else struggling with this, you need to open and view the contents of HighPointRR.kext and HighPointIOP.kext (for me these were located in /Library/Extensions). Copy them to your desktop. Right click on kext, click on view contents. Once inside you will need to open Info.plist with a text editor. Change all instances of "External" to "Internal". Install using KextBeast from this website. Reboot.

Hello All, If anyone can answer this I would be most grateful. If I did go with this route installing hardware raid on my hackintosh would another Windows 10 pc on the same local network be able to access media files on the hackintosh? I am deciding whether or not I should instead get a NAS. I would prefer to use my hackintosh if this is possible however. Thanks again for any assistance.

You can use your mackintosh to share out drives. Anything shared over ethernet will tend to be slower than locally attached drives no matter what you use.

There are native drivers for this card in OSX. I have 2x Plextor Extreme 256GB SSD running in RAID 0 as my boot drive and 4x 2TB Seagate with 64MB cache, running in RAID 5. I have my home folder mounted in the RAID 5 setup and I'm getting over 500MB read and writes to this drive. My 2 SSD's are getting over 700MB writes and over 900MB reads.

How did this work out for you long term? The only HighPoint cards that support TRIM for SSDs are the new SSD7120 but it only works with U.2 drives! All other HighPoint cards (I have the RR2760a and RR2840a) do not support TRIM. My best 1TB SATA SSDs so far are the Mushkin 1tb reactors. Mushkin says they will work OK without TRIM but will also benefit from TRIM. This doesn't leave me with a good feeling. For now, I'll use the RR2840a (4 SAS ports, $250 at Amazon) to drive 12 5tb Seagate 2.5s in RAID 10 and run 1 SAS port out the back for external use.
