I wouldnt even mind going AMD, except that their best card (rx 480) is like half the power and performance of a 1070. Are they releasing a 1070 competitor (performance in the 400-450 price range) anytime soon?

Q1: Yes
Q2: Yes

That's what I'm doing with a GT 710 2GB passive and a 1080 FTW.

@alain57: Compute performance is almost on par, despite the (quite large) price gap: http://www.hardwareluxx.de/index.ph...39615-amd-radeon-rx-480-im-test.html?start=12

That's what Apple cares about, since it's important for FCPX and other GPGPU applications. This doesn't have anything to do with gaming performance, but Apple never cared about that and most likely never will.

@MadMac1969: I'm curious to find out what that 490 is going to be. Releasing a Dual-Polaris-GPU now would be utterly stupid as it barely beats the 1070, surely won't be cheaper and uses twice as much power. Additionally you'll have to deal with Crossfire issues. Who would buy that if you can have a 1070 or 1080...?

They could have released this GPU right away (when Polaris was announced) as a stop-gop until Vega is ready. But with Vega (hopefully) around the corner, this wouldn't make much sense. If they release a dual Polaris board now, one has to conlude that Vega is Vaporware. So lets hope that the 490 actually is Vega...

Looks like it's picking up some traction on ******.com/r/apple.

People there are interested in eGPUs (and that may be the only "official" way nVidia will care about drivers).

There's also a new Akitio TB3 eGPU for $299 (Which is the cheapest I've seen for an external box with an included PSU that supports a high end GPU). I wonder if this is "blocked" by Apple (although their site says it doesn't work with macOS).

Who? People who can't have an Nvidia. Simple as that. As things stand, all future MacOS users fall in that category.
You are aware that current bugs with AMD cards (boot to black screen, wake/sleep) and their workarounds (iGPU = Primary) make the use of Polaris graphics almost as painful as the "Pascal + iGPU" setup many people here are using?

The AMD Fury X is more powerful than the RX480 and available in the $350 - $400 range. The Fury X is not as powerful in games as the 1070, but it does work with Sierra.

That looks pretty bad, but just because Apple has shut the door for the time being does not mean that will be the case forever. Again, this could be strategic on Apple's part: a lot of people are buying computers around Xmas and Apple are releasing new iMacs and Mac Pros soon, it would be a bad move to support hardware which would disincentivize purchasing Apple products over building a Hackintosh. I think the Hackintosh community tends to I think the practice is more niche than it really is. Although I have few friends who have built Hackintoshes, most of them have heard about them and several have considered building one.
So if i have a 760 and a 1070 i can have them standby in one os and same for the other?
If so explain pls.
