The iMac (BCM94360CD) card that I listed in Post #1's Components works for me.

You can use the NVMeGeneric.kext but you will experience Shutdown/Start-up error(s) notices, which haven't hurt anything in my experience. The kext was original written for real Mac Pros to use the NVMe SSDs for data disks, not boot disks. Thus, the errors with the NVMeGeneric.kext.

Since moving to the Clover patch - and now the patched driver itself - from the third party driver, I'm not having shutdown issues at all (I would get random restarts before).

Must remember to patch the driver before restarting from a software update!

Yes, it's going to be like the Nvidia web driver scenario unless Apple supports the NVMe standard. Note that when you created the kext, you had to use the parameter "10_11_6" (or the current version of the operating system) which means for you'll have to download the latest version before updating El Capitan or installing Sierra and using the appropriate OS X version number.

Yes indeed! The mod posts on here about new OSX updates are usually very helpful at reminding people of such things.

I had a bit of free time tonight and decided to try changing system definition to iMac14,2. Everything seems to work fine. For some reason, geekbench scores seem a bit better when using this definition. Secondly, upon reboot, my system lost some settings such as a few Safari extensions. Weird...

Now that is strange. Well, persevere and keep me informed on your progress. BTW, you need to start working on your build description. Your MRs post is a great beginning as User Builds are more about why you built the system and what you plan/are using it for. (See Template sticky post.)

Yes, I will leave it on this definition and use the system for a while to see if there are any other anomalies. I am still awaiting delivery of the BCM94360CD card. I ordered from the Amazon link but it's shipping from China so it may take a while.

So far, the one major difference I've noticed between the two definitions is the Energy Saver System Preference. With iMac14,2, it now looks like:

Other than this and slightly better geekbench scores, I think everything is working great. The road to Sierra may be a fairly simple one...

Sure thing. I'll work on a build description after I get the BCM94360CD installed.

I noticed a new anomaly. Last night, I fell asleep with the computer sleeping and when I woke up, it was off. Today, I left the computer sleeping starting at about 8:30am. When I returned home at about 1:30pm, the computer was off again. According to console logs, it shut down at 11:58am. But I don't know why...

Has anyone else experienced this before? Can this be caused by the SSDT?

Update:

The computer shut down again on its own after sleeping for about 6.5 hours. I have reverted back to using the MacPro3,1 definition to see if this could be the cause. Again, after switching, some of my Safari extensions needed to be reinstalled. I'll report back after letting it sleep for a while or if it shuts down again.

Btw, I believe the shut downs are clean because upon reboot, OS X doesn't have the pop-up window saying system shut down because of a problem.

Hi guys! Just one question. How quickly the system boots with this configuration (gene + 950 pro)?
From the moment you press the button until the login screen appear... Thanks!

Quick enough so you notice it. I'm assuming, when you say "press the button", that you mean turn on the machine? Dunno. I never felt the need to put a watch to it since the system has to boot through the BIOS startup. However, at the Clover boot screen after I choose the the disk to boot from, it's less than 20 seconds, I'm guessing. If I think of it, I'll time it from turn on. But, I skip the screen login, booting directly into the Desktop.

Update:
- 15 seconds Push the computer turn on button (cold start) until BIOS post screen appears
- 5 seconds until Clover boot screen appears
- <15 seconds to load to the Desktop after selecting boot disk (I got distracted)

Update to my self shutdown issues:

So, I reverted back to MacPro3,1 system definition and it hasn't shut itself down once. During my testing of the iMac14,2 definition, I found that for the most part, it worked nicely. One great thing was that Handoff worked right off the bat whereas I have never been able to get it working with MacPro3,1 definition.

On the down side, of course, I had the weird self shutdown issues. Also, sometimes (not always!) when waking from sleep, the screen resolution would change. Going to the Displays system preference would show that I lose many of the resolution choices I normally have and only a restart would restore them.

So, as far as I can tell, the only major hurdle is sleep. Hopefully, this can be fixed easily so the upgrade to Sierra will be easier.
