Intel Nuc 2.0 (Broadwell)

I want to use a NUC in my iMac mod. But don't know which one choose. Also, does anybody know a good place to buy? Is there any cheap/good NUC?

How cheap do you want? I like the NUC5i5RYK, to which you can add 8 GB RAM and a 120 or 250 GB m.2 SSD for a pretty modest total (NUC5i3RYK even cheaper). Of course you may want a keyboard, mouse, monitor, and USB WiFi if you don't have that stuff already. I've gotten my NUCs from Amazon and MicroCenter.

Well, I will want it to put it inside of an iMac, so that's why I need a NUC. And yeah, it isn't so cheap, but I guess it will be a good investment. I really don't need a powerful NUC, but by the other hand the NUC5i5RYK will give a long life to my imac mod. Just one question: Does it have sata ports? or only m2. SSD port? It's important cause by the moment I don't want to put an SSD in my mod, but if so, I will want to use "Fusion Drive" feature.

Thank you for answer!

The RYK models are shorter and have the m.2 slot and an interior SATA port, but only a header for an atypical SATA power cable and no interior space to install a SATA drive. It's really just there because it's the same board as the RYH uses, though in theory you could fabricate a custom top that accommodated a drive.

The RYH models are taller and have space and cabling for a 2.5" SATA drive in addition to the m.2 port. So if you'll want both drives, and the increase in height is not a concern, better to get the RYH.

I guess I will go with the NUC5i5RYK. If both versions have the same MOBO and the only difference is the case (and the price) then I will buy the RYK. The space inside an iMac is reduced and I'm going to get the NUC out of the case. By the way, is it possible to get a NUC without case? Cause I don't really need it.

Greetings

To be clear, the SATA power looks like it uses some kind of custom cable from a header on the board to the drive. It may be that you can get that cable elsewhere (I know there's a company that sells cables for the special USB headers on the NUC), but if you want to operate a SATA drive you might confirm that you can get the right cable before you buy the RYK (which does not include the SATA power cable, only I think the header on the board).

You may be able to get the board alone, but I haven't tried that. I think the part number for just the board is NUC5i5RYB.

The RYH is often slightly cheaper than the RYK, even though larger and with more parts. Go figure.

Ohhhh know I understand! But, can it be attached with a normal SATA cable? I mean, I don't need to get the power from the MOBO itself. I will give power to the HDD from the iMac PSU, is it possible to power the HDD from an external source and only connect the sata cable to the MOBO (as any other computer)?

The NUC board has a (single) plain old SATA plug, so it would be possible to connect a regular SATA data cable from NUC to SATA drive.

I'm not sure how you're planning to connect this all up. If you're planning to run the NUC board off the iMac power supply, I'm not sure how that would work -- I've never seen behind the NUC board where (it seems) the NUC fan/PSU is located.

is it possible to power the HDD from an external source and only connect the sata cable to the MOBO (as any other computer)?

Yes, of course! Because everything (NUC, HDD, Display etc.) is supplied from the same iMac PSU, everything has the same GND (0V) reference.

I would go for a D54250WYKH Haswell NUC, because they are still available and work perfectly well with OS X.
