Background
I have no prior experience to building my own pc. This was my first build ever. I have owned a macbook pro for 4 years and I simply just needed something more powerful. I have been lurking on tonymac for about a year now. I have learned so much and still have sooo much to learn.

Comments

  • I decided to go with the Fractal Design Define R4 because it is a very quiet case. The window on the side is very nice. It supports 140mm fans all around. The drive bay cages are easily removable. The whole case is pretty much tool-less.
  • I went with the UD3H because it was in my price range and I was able to get it at micro center with my CPU.
  • The hyper 212 EVO: I chose this cooler because it does a great job for a $30 CPU cooler. I do not plan to OC, so I thought this would be plenty. So far its doing a great job. Never seen my CPU go above 35 degrees C.

Installation Notes
  • I actually did not update from Mountain Lion. I just started out on Mavericks 10.9
  • My motherboard was already on BIOS Version F7. So I didn't need to update my BIOS.
UEFI Settings
  1. My motherboard was aready on BIOS version F7. If you need to update your bios to F7 check out Short's Build
  2. Enter the Bios and Press F2 to load to the Classic View
  3. Press F7 to load optimized default values then proceed to change it
  4. Under Peripherals > xHCI Mode, change it to AUTO
  5. Under Peripherals > xHCI Hand-OFF, change it to ENABLED
  6. Under Peripherals > EHCI Hand-OFF, Change it to Enabled
  7. Under Power Management > Wake on Lan, change it to Disabled.
  8. Under BIOS Features > Boot Options, change it to your boot disk but pick the one that starts with P2 or some number like that.
-- Do not select the UEFI version or you will get the missing operating system error.
---9. Save and Exit Bios.

Installing Mavericks 10.9

Follow the tonymacx86 installation guide: http://www.tonymacx86.com/374-unibeast-install-os-x-mavericks-any-supported-intel-based-pc.html

I did not use any boot flags.

MultiBeast Configuration

I USED Short's MultiBeast File. The -v bootflag is on for boot up. I will include that file in my attachments at the bottom.

Note:
  • You only need TRIM enabler if you have an SSD
  • The WIFI Card should work out of the box.
What works:
  • Front and Back USB 3.0/2.0 Ports
  • Front Audio
  • WIFI
  • Sleep
  • FakeSMC Plugins + HWMonitor
What Doesn't work:
  • I get a fuzzy/snowy screen on bootup right before login page.
    • I am using hdmi -> hdmi. I will try dvi->vga ->> vga next week.
    • I have tried changing the system profile to 14,2. But this did not help
  • Rear Audio ports (but dont really care)

Dual Booted Windows 7 with OSX 10.9.0

I also would like to thank the whole tonymacx86 community. This would have never been possible without all of you. I felt the need to make this post because other people's successful build posts helped me tremendously. So I am trying to give back =)

Here are some links to other builds that I looked at before building my own build.

UPDATE:
  • 1/12/14 - Switch from hdmi -> hdmi to dvi -> hdmi made no difference. I still get the fuzzy screen during bootup.
  • 4/22/14 - Successful Dual boot.

[SUCCESS] Changerrs' Build: 4770k/Gigabyte UD3h/HD 4600/840 EVO/ 16GB RAM

Hi changerrs,
great build and guide!
Do you have any issues with the OS freezing, forcing one to do a hard reset? Many users, as well as myself, have reported this problem with the same board.

Thanks Short!

Fortunately, no I havent had any issues with the OS freezing. Ive never had to do a hard reset.
Thats odd that you are an I am not, considering that I used your multibeast file.

Hey VTSIM, no I havent found a solution yet. I am actually away from where my hack is. So I will not be able to work on it until next monday.

But on a side note, I was noticing that I do not get the fuzzy screen every time. I am not sure why it doesnt occur every time.

SOLVED IT

<key>IGPlatformID</key>
<string>0C260000</string

i added this :)

if that doesnt work for u just play around with different values (make sure u search tonymacx site for IGPlatformID values that goes with the hd4600 :)

Hey VTSIM, it worked and got rid of the fuzzy screen! but it changed my resolution... -_- Id rather sit through a snowy screen, than have to change my resolution every time i boot up my computer.

do u have 1080p mode installed on ur multibeast config?
or
better work around with these values from here :) im sure this will do the trick for u !
