I have the same Problem you have! After Effexts Crashes cause 6870 is not fully recognized! I am on 10.8.2 too.

Tried all kind of Kexts and Patches in Kexts.

What I have already done is:
1) Set the chameleon.org.boot.plist to ATI config, Duckweed, Ati Ports 4 (also tried 5) -> this worked in 10.7.5!

2) Tried this with GraphicsEnabler=yes and =no!

3) Tried to add the Vendor ID and Devide ID to AMDRadeonAccelerator.kext and ATI6000Controller.kext!

4) Tried to boot up with the ATISupport.kext, ATIFramebuffer.kext, ATI6000Controller.kext in S/L/E which i took from my 10.8.0.

My Device / Vendor ID is 0x67381002 and it is a XFX 1GB D5 X HD6870 Dual Fan.

It works on my build. Try setting iMac 12,1 instead of Mac Pro.

SOLVED!

What a feck! This dam device id was the Problem and did not make it to recognize the ATI Card!
After I deleted the ID which was made for Ehternet Appsore, Icloud Fix the GFX showed up in SYS Profiler as it should!

Great! Anyway, I used just the method I wrote in the post, I didn't touch any kext or configuration files other than those written.
